hill 4.*^, is a considerable village in the parish of
Hoddam. It lies on the great mail road from Car-
lisle to Glasgow, and is much noted for its extensive
fairs for cattle, &c', which are held on the first Fri-
day after the 11th of January, the first Friday after
the 11th of February, the fii.st Friday after the lltb
of March, the. first Friday after the 11th of April,
the first Friday after the 11th of May, the first Tues-
day after the 11th of June, the first Friday ^fter the
11th of July, the 26th of August, the 18th of Sep-
tember, (or the Friday before) the 26th of October,
the Friday after the 11th of November, and the Fri-
day after the 11th of December. A distillery is the
only manufactory in the place, which otherwise
contains only a few shops, &c. for the accommoda-
tion of the inhabitants and strangers. A small stream
runs through the village, over which are thrown
several small bridges or arches, for the purpose of
crossing from one side of the street to the other.
