DUFFTOWN
Is a modern village in the parish of Mortlach, and
county of Banff, not having been built more than
six years. It is distant from Edinburgh 118 miles,
Banff 29, Aberdeen 49, Keith 9, Abeilnur 4, and
Inveraven 14. Belveny House, which is very near,
is a large and elegant mansion. The tliree old Cas-
tles of Auchindune, Baliievy, and Edlnlassie, are of
great antiquity. The parish of Mortlach is famous
as the scene of the signal victory gained over the
Danes by Malcolm II. 'lliere Ls now erecting
in Dufftown a small Roman Catholic Chapel, which
is in the modern Gothic style of architecture. Tlie
village is rapidly improving, by the encouragement
of its noble proprietor, tbe rigbt Hon. James, Earl
of Fyfe, and is governed by a justice of the peace. —
There are four fairs in the year, viz. in April, July,
August, and November. The village has a parisli
church, and a population of about 550 inhabitants.

^ Parish on the banks of the river Aven, lies
artly in Banffshire, and paitly in the county of
Elgin or Moray. Its length is fourteen miles, its
breadth about nine. It is governed by a baron bai-
lie and it lies 42 miles S. W. of Banff, 72 W. N. W.
of Aberdeen, 8 S. W. of Aberlour, 12 from Mort-
lach 22 S. W. of Keith, 14 S. of Rothes, 22 S. by
W of Fochabers, 22 S. of Elgin, 12 from Tomihtoul,
14 N.N.E. of Grantoun, 20 from Abernethy, and 24
N. N- E. of Duthill, Besides the Aven and the
Spey. i^ is watered by the Livet. The surface is ir-
regular, but cannot be called mountainous, except
Belrinnes, which is mostly in this parish, aud
abounds in grouse. The district of Glenlivet is re-
markably fertile, and noted for the excellence of its
whiskey. The sides of the river abound with copses
of birch and alder, and, on the banks of the Spey,
there is a considerable extent of oak. Ballindalloch,
the elegant mansion of G. Grant, esq., member of
parliament for Sutherlandshire, is pleasantly situa-
ted at the confluence of the Aven and Spey. A di-
lapidated castle, called Drummin, and the ruins of
Castletown are among the remains ol antiquity. Here
is a church of the establishment with its chapel of
ease ; and a fair is held on the second Tuesday in
July.
