LARGS, &e.
|^i0Ot& Co/s
name with the town, is the most northerly in tho
county, and forms a strip alojig the sea-shore, being
bounaed by niouutains on the land side. Few dis-
tricts possess more romantic scenery; the old castles
of Kilmorlv, Shelmurly, Knock, and Fairley, with
Brisbane House, ornament this parish. It was on
the plain of Largs, that the celebrated battle was
fought between the Scots and the Danes, iu their
last invasion of this country, in 1263. The glen,
near Kelburn, the cascade, which has a fall of fifty
feet perpendicular, and other natural beauties, ar-
rest the attention of the traveller.
At FAtRLiE, distant from Largs two miles, is the
picturesque seat and family mansion of the Right
Honourable th« Earl of Glasgov.', called Kelburne
castle, surrounded by extensive plantations, and de-
lightful marine scenery. A school, erected by his
lordship, instructs the children of the poor ; it is a
neat building, and forms a pleasing object in the
village.
