PORTOBELLO
S a considerable vlllac;e in the parish of Diulding-
Rton, about 4 miles to theeastwaid of Edinburgh. A
brisk trade is carried on iti the manufactiire of
mtonc-ware, Inicks, tiles, and various preparations of
lead. A great number of neat houses have been
erected, which ; re chiefly occajMed hy families dur-
ing the bathinir season ; a suite of hot and coki sea
water baths, with a neat chapel of ease, liave t:)een
erected within these few years ; in Joppur, a small
village in the ncighlourhood, there are very exten-
sive salt-woiks. Many new streets have been laid
out in Portobello, with every prospect of beint?
filled up; the purity of the air, and the convenient
distance from Edinburgh and Musselburgh, are
great recommendations ; and the constant (massing
and re-passing of the numerous stages give 'a faci-
lity of communication, in every way desirable in a
place, tlie occasional resort of summer fashionables.
