MUSSELBURGH AND FrSHERROW.
Jl HE town ot Musselburgh, situated in the parisii
of Inveresk, and in the county of Mid-Lothian, is
distant from Edinbro' six miles, from Gla.sgow forty
nine, from Paisley fifty six, from Portobello two,
from the village of Inveresk about one and a half,
and from Preston Pans two miles. It is very an-
cient, and before the Reformation belonged to the
Abbey of Dunfermline, from which it was taken by
King James VI, who gave the superiority to the
Lauderdale family, with whom it remained until
the year 1709,when it was purchased by the Dutchess
of Monmouth and Buccleugh. It is generally sup-
posed, that the first charter was obtained from the
Earl ofMarr, in 1340, forcertnin attentions paid
by the inhabitants to the great Randolph, Earl of
MurraT, who died here in 1332; but the most an-
cient charter, now extant, bears date 11th Decem-
ber 1562; this was granted by Robert, couimeiidator
of Dunfermline, and has been continued by subse-
quent charters, and acts of Parliament, and more
particularly by one from the Duke of I^auderdale,
in which all the ancient rights and privileges are
confirmed. The magistrates of Edinburgh erected
it into a royal burgh by charter under the great seal.
It is governed by a town-council of eighteen, includ-
ing two bailies and a treasurer, all of whom are
annually elceted ; there are also seven incorporated
trades. The trade of IMusselborgh is considerable,
and several manufactures give eni])loymeiit to nu-
meious individuals. Tan works, beweries, the
making of hats, bricks and tiles are the principal.
The magistrates are empowered to hold a court of
record, and to grant infeoftments. At the eastern .
extremity of the town, and adjoining thw sea, are the .
Links, on which the Edinburgh races are held .
yearly-; and the celebrated game of Golf is fre--'
quently played here by the members of the clubs.
FisiiERRow is connected with Musselburgh by a'
handsome stone bridge of several arches, and unitesi'
in the election of magistrates ; indeed they may be
considered as one place. It has a good harbour, and,
a branch of the Custom house. The principal part of
the inhabitants are tisherm.'n, who supply the Edin-
burgh market.''. The occupation of the women of
these towns and iieia:hbourhood must not be omit-
ted; they are the carriers of greens, salt, and fish, to..
EdiubuiKli; they trudge to the capital, loaded with ;
very heavy burdens, early in the morning, and re- :
turn by mid-day, after disposing of their produce. .
In this" way they gain from tid. to Is. 3d. a day. The
husbands being fishermen, or of olher occupations,
they make a considerable livelihood between them.
This mode of life gives a rough, and more thau
masculine turn to the manners of the women.
POST OFFICE, High-street, Post Master, Mr. John Leitch. The Mail arrives eveiy morning
