PigOt k Co /g HISTORY OF SCO TLAND. JBircctClj).
countries. This has the effect of rendering the manners, dress, and Umgiuige of both
alike; of course all national prejudice will soon be at an end.— Scotland, though
neither so rich, nor so populous, as the southern division of the island, has long
borne a name for martial exploits ; and of late her children have riseu to as great
eminence in literature and the arts. Her bleak mountains are an exccLeut nursery
for bravp and hardy soldiers ; her boisterous waves and rocky shores, for active and
intrepid sailors.— J'he main land of North Britain is naturally divideu into three
portions. The extremity is parted from the centre by the Murray Frith, Loch L^ess
LochLochy, and Loch Linlie, connected with each other by the Caledonian canal.
The midland portion is again parted from the southern by the Friths ot Forth and
Clyde, the river Forth, Ben Lomond, and its cognominal lake. These are again
unequally subdivided into thirty-three counties, Avhich, in the following table com-
prising the sheriffdoms, stewartries, and bailiwicks, and the chief towns, are ar-
ranged according to their situation.

These different shires return thirty members to the imperial pailiament, each one,
except the following, which alternately send one ; Bute and Caithness, Nairn and
Cromarty, Clackmannan and Kinross. The Royal Burghs, which separate, or
collectively, return one member, are fifteen Thus the whole number
returned by Scotland to the House of Commons is forty-five. — I'he fojlowmg is a list
of the Royal Burghs, classed together under their political union, each division
sending a representative to parliament. Several other towns, however, which have
not that privilege, are become very considerable, such as Paisley, Greenock, and
