The Publisheks op the Post Office Greenock Directory "beg
'to return their acknowledgments for the liberal patronage be-
stowed on the Publication which, for fourteen years, they have
had the honour to conduct, and which has become indispensable.
During the past century the Town has increased from about
4000 to 43,206, as at last Census, taken on the 7th April of this
year, exclusive of 2000 persons estimated as belonging to the
Town, but absent at sea prosecuting their avocations.
Nothing has transpired to warrant us in changing or modifying
â– what we stated in the Preface to the Directory for last year —
1860-61.
In the present issue for 1861-62 many additions and improve-
ments have been made. The Plan of the Town, which is prefixed
to the volume, has been specially prepared as an accompaniment,
and, for its size, will be found useful and correct. The Appendix
has been much enlarged, and will, it is hoped, be found very com-
plete and comprehensive. The Sliippiug Lists have been carefully
extended, and the information given is exact. The Statistics of
the Volunteer Artillery and Rifle Corps may be relied upon as
authentic ; and, indeed, in every part of the work, the Publishers
have aimed at making it a correot book of reference suited to the
locality. In addition to the usual alphabetical arrangement, a
Street Directory has been introduced, so that if the Street in which
a person reside be known, his full name and the number of his
residence will be easily found. Advantage has been taken of this
double reference to correct some slight errors that have crept into
the body of the work ; and, on the whole, this number of the
Directory, as the list of contents will indicate, is superior to any
of its predecessors.
The Directory continues to be esteemed by Advertisers as a
medium for keeping their professions, trades, or enterprises before
the Public, and their orders have been faithfully obeyed.
The Publishers again return their thanks for the liberal support
they have received, and again assure the Public that no exertion,
will be spared to sustain the Directory, and to preserve and in-
crease the reputation it has obtained.
