The Council meet monthly, or oftener, as occasion requires, and general meetings
of the whole members are called when necessary. The election of the Council takes
place on the first Monday of July annually.
OBJECTS OF THE RENFREWSHIRE POLITICAL UNION,
1. To obtain by every just and legal means, such a Reform in the Commons House
of Parliament, as will ensure a real and effectual representation of all classes of ti.e
people.— 2d. To enquire and consider in a lawful manner, from time to time, respect-
ing the rights and liberties of the industrious classes, and respecting the legal means
of securing those which remain, and recovering those which are.lost.~3d. To collect
and organize the peaceful expressions of the Public opinion, so as to bring it to bear
upon both Houses of Parliament, in a just, legal, and efficient way.— 4th. To endea-
vour to obtain an effectual Burgh and Law Reform in Scotland.— 5th. To promote
by every legal means, the elections of .Members of Parliament, so as to secure the
return ofupright and able Representatives of the People— 6th. To obtain the esta-
blishment of a shorter duration of Parliaments, by the Kepeal of the Septennial Act, .
which IS of recent introduction, is dangerous in principle, and injurious to the best
interests of the country,— 7th. To obtain the extension of the Elective Franchise, at
least, to all male householders ; and also the right of Voting by Ballot, that purity
and good order may be preserved, and bribery and all undue influence be defeated its
Parliamentary and Burgh elections —8th. Unceasingly to plead for, until obtaine-?,
such a change and reduction of Taxation and National expenditure, as shall be n -
cessary to restore the Country to its former prosperous state.— 9th. To prepare Peti-
tions, Addresses, and Remonstrances to the Crown and the Legislative Bodies, res-
pecting the preservation and restoration of Public Rights, and respecting the repeal
of Bad Laws, and the enactment of Good Laws —10th. To avoid all privateer secret
proceedings of any kind or nature, and all concealment of any of the views or objects
of the Union, it being the fixed basis of the Union in all things to obey and conform
to the law.
