STATISTICS OF COUNTIES IN SCOTLAND.
The SheriflFand Small Debt Courts are
held every Friday during session.
Quarter Sessions are held first Tuesday
of March, May, August, and last Tuesday
of October.
Justice of Peace Small Debt Court is
held at Kirkibol last Thursday of March,
June, September, and December. . At
Bettyhill first Thursday of February and
August. At Melvich first Thursday of
May and November.
Sheriff Small Debt Courts are held at
Lairg, Scourie, Melvich, Tongue, and
Helmsdale three times a year, in May,
July, and October. At Golspie four
times a year, in May, July, October, and
December.
WIGTONSHIRE
Forms the south-west comer of Scotland ; on the west it has the North Channel,
and on the south the Irish sea, forming on its coast Luce Bay and the MuU of
Galloway. On the east it has Kirkcudbrightshire, from which it is partly sepa^
rated by Wigton Bay. On the north it has the county of Ayr. Its extent is
288,960 acres, of which about one-third is estimated to be arable. The valued
rent, in 1674, was 26,093 pounds Scots, and the total value of assessed property in
1843, £135,407. The popuJation (1851) 43,263, having increased 10 per cent since
the census of 1841. It has three Royal burghs, Wigton, the county town, Stran-
raer, and Whithorn, which unite with New Galloway in returning a member to
Parhament. The county returns one member, with a constituency of above 1200
registered electors.
