FIFESHIRE
Forms a peninsula, botmded on the north by the Frith of Tay, and on the south by
the Frith of Forth ; the east coast being on the German Ocean, is usuaUy called St
Andrew's Bay. On the west it has the counties of Perth, Kinross, and Clackman-
nan. Its area 298,800 acres, of which more than two-thirds are cultivated. Its
population in 1861 was 153,011, shewing an increase of 8 per cent since 1841.
The valued rent in 1674 was 373,000 pounds Scots, and the annual value of real
property in 1843 was i,'608,922. The southern parts contain coal, iron, and hme,
which ai'e extensively worked in various places. Dunfermhne and Kirkcaldy are
celebrated for their linen manufactures, while the villages along the coast of the
Forth send out a numerous fleet of boats to the fishery at the mouth of the
Frith. The northern parts are more of a rural nature, and are well cultivated.
There are thirteen Eoyal burghs in Fife. Kirkcaldy, Burntisland, Dysart, and
Kinghorn return one member — joint constituency above 600. Dunfermhne and
Inverkeithing, along with Stirling, &c., return a member, of which the Fife portion
of the constituency amount to above 500, about half the total number ; and the
St Andrews district of burghs, consisting of St Andrews, the two Anstruthers,
Crail, Cupar, Kilrenny, and Pittenweem, return one member, of which the con-
stituency is nearly 800. The county returns one member, having a constituency
of 2500 registered electors.
