OAVING to the labour and length of time necessary to collect information from so great a
variety of sources, spread over the whole of Scotland, and to adjust, prepare for press, and
entirely re-set and correct the vast number of multifarious entries contained in the County
Directory, it is in contemplation to issue in future only one section at a time, A. and B. alter-
nately, and C. annually, if such can be arranged.
By this arrangement the contents would more nearly correspond to the date of publication,
as the interval necessary for collaboration, correspondence, and correction of proofs would be
confined to the respective parts. Time would also be saved which is necessary for the trans-
position and adjustment of one section for another, and for the printing of the second section
after the first is ready for the public. Still further to facilitate the issue, and to limit the area
of inquiry and correspondence, sometimes much involved, it may be desirable to reduce the ever
increasing catagory of VUlas within the free delivery, which are in such proximity to Towns or
Villages that the Postal and Telegraph information given in Section III. may be regarded as
sufficient, besides being also of a less variable nature. The entries of this kind are naturally a
fruitful source of error through constant removals, and seem unsuitable for insertion in a County
Directory, which cannot be issued annually, however much a number of subscribers may so desire,
and which is only designed to be a Directory to Mansions, Farms, and Rural Holdings, the
occupants of which have presumably a tenure of some years, and the importance of which gives
them a claim to be included in a work of the kind.
The Publishers will be glad to have any suggestions for the improvement of the work. They
have already been asked to include in the Town and Village Section all Justices of the Peace and
Legal County Officials. To these might be added Station Agents, Chairmen of Local Authorities,
and, generally, such Stipendiary Officials whose names it might be desirable to ascertain, or to
whom it might be necessary to send communications addressed to them individually. Although
such are suggested, however, the probability of frequent changes — for example, in the case of
Station Agents — might make the insertion of ;i particular individual a source of unintentional
error, and cause inconvenience when an entry was relied en, as it might be without considera-
tion. A. G.
