NOTE.
In sending this sheet to press, the Publishers take tlie opportunity of adding, that, owing to the
continued development of the Postal and Telegraphic system, it is impracticable in a compilation
of the kind, to give effect to all the alterations involved in the numerous official changes, beyond a
■certain period corresponding to the Postmasters' returns. The time required to trace and adjust
varying information from different qtcarters, and prepare the entries for press, places the
volume at a great disadvantage. Notwithstanding this, however, every effort has been made to
ensure accuracy, in respect of what may be ascertainable under the circumstances. The obittiary
<m,d other puMic notices liave been followed up where possible, and every doubtful entry verified
■as the work proceeded, so far as there were means and opportunities for doing so. The care taken
with Section I., hoioever, has not altogether pixvented duplication of addresses, arising in many
ways. This is observable in re-sorting the entries for Section 11. , where differently spelt, or
differently named Residences, come together tinder the same occupant's name. Wherever observed,
the parties concerned will be asked to rectify mistakes during the correction of the proofs of
Section II. Much has been done, and loill continue to be done, by correspondence and enquiry, to
<fuard against error, and the continuity of error, and to ensure completeness. In the earlier stage
of compilation this loas absolutely necessary, but, as the work progressed and the labour became
involved, the difficulties could only be altogether surmounted at an expenditure of time which would
have unreasonably prolonged the period of publication.
It is unavoidable that there should be frequent changes in the tenancy of residences, caused by
■deaths, sales, and removals, at all times of the year, which there is no means of methodically
ascertaining, and which the gradual enlargement of the work from, its original design fifty
years ago, of a "Directory to Gentlemen's Seats, Villages, etc.," has made it increasingly
difficult to deal ■ivith. Continual corrections too, because of Postal or Telegraphic extensions, if
attempted would but lead to confusion. Were it even possible to trace every entry so affected
at various stages, adjoining reside7ices would obviously differ in consequence of such extensions,
according to their alphabetical relation in any of the Sections. {See Note at the beginning of this
Section"].
Notwithstanding the avoidance of the insertion of places beyond the scope of the work, there arc
jdoubtless many Villas given, in near proximity to Toivns and Villages, which a County Directory
is not designed to include. Such have been allowed to remain in this edition rather than that the
desired completeness of the work should suffer by inadvertent omissions.
The Publishers will be glad to have any errors, caused by lapse of time or otherwise, pointed out
as soon as discovered, that they may be noted for any future edition, and any recent changes of
occupants indicated.
