MRS BAILIE Roger's mortification, the widows' fund — 1665.
Mrs Euphemia Marr, widow of Bailie William Roger, left hy
her Will to the Kirk Session the sum of 2000 merks Scots, for
the use and benefit of poor widows, and thus laid the
foundation of the Widows' Fund. At present upwards of
thirty poor widows receive Is 6d weekly. TLe Kirk Session

GEORGE BRUCe's MORTIFICATION 1733.
The sum of 5500 merks Scots was directed to be applied thus :
One third of the interest to be applied in augmentation of his
library, bequeathed to the Grammar School, of which he was
rector, but the use of it restricted to the Teachers of the
School, the Provost, Dean of Guild, and Ministers. Another
third part of the interest to be paid to the doctors of the Gram-
mar School (teachers under the Rector), who were appointed to
act as librarians, each in turn, during a year, — the remainder to
be paid to the Janitor of the school, as an encouragement to ap-
point one qualified to assist in teaching. In addition, the
interest of 4000 merks Scots was appointed for the maintenance
and education of a poor boy (the son of a burgess) at the
Grammar School, for the space of six years. At the termina-
tion of each bursar's time, the bursary is to be kept vacant
one year, — the emoluments being directed to be paid to the
retiring bursar to enable him to prosecute his studies farther,
or to put him to some lawful employment. At present the
funds provide for two. The Provost, Dean of Guild, Doctors
M'Lachlan and Adie, and the Doctors or teachers of the
Grammar School, Patrons.
JAMES constable's MORTIFICATION — 1821.
The interest of a sum exceeding 2700/. Sterling is divided
among as many boys for iheir maintenance and education as
the Patrons can admit at the rate of 8/. per annum, paid
half-yearly to each. The number, of course, is regulated by
the rate of interest. The boys are admitted to the benefit of
the fund for four years, — the age being from eight to fourteen
years. The Provost, Dean of Guild, and Parish Minister,
Patrons.
