Scottish Union Fire and Life Insurance Company— continued.
The Progressive Increase of the Company's Fire business is shewn in the following Table of the
Duties paid to Government on Insurances, and of the Sums insured on Eai-ming Stock (free of duty),
taken from the Parliamentary Returns : —
INSURANCES OF FARMING STOCK.
Farming Stock, which includes Hay and all sorts of Corn and other Grain, Implements of
Husbandry, and Live Stock, may be insured with this Company, against Loss by Fire or Lightning,
in one sum on a Farm, and in the Offices, ivithout any Average Clause, for a year or for any shorter
period. The Thrashing Mill Machinery requires to have a separate value stated thereon.
Losses caused by Lightning to Farming Stock are Paid;_ and no Government Duty is
Chargeable on the Insurance of Farming Stock.
Amount Insueed by Scottish Union Insurance Company on Farming Stock for Year
ENDING Christmas 1859, £1,719,484.

BONUSES

Have been declared in 1841, 1846, 1851, and 1856. At the last investigation in 1856—
A Reversionary Bonus was allocated upon those Policies entitled to participate, in proportion to
the Premiums paid dm-iug the five preceding years, varying from about One to upwards of One and a
Half per cent, per annum on the sums assured, according to age and duration of the Policy.
The following Examples are taken from the Company's Books: —
The Reversionary Bonus may be applied, at the option of the Assured, in any of the following
ways : —
1. It may he added to the Sum Assured; or,
2. Applied in Reduction of Future Premiums; or,
3. Surrendered for its present value in Cash.
The next Division of Profits will take Place in 1861.
NON-PARTICIPATING POLICIES.
The low Rates charged in the Non-Participating Class are peculiarly well adapted for Loan Tran-
sactions ; also, where the object is to assure a specific Sum payable at death, at the lowest Rate of
Premium compatible with Security.
