SCALES OF CHARGES FOR ADVERTISING
IN THE EDINBURGH, LEITH, GLASGOW, AND NORTH BRITISH COMMERCIAL AND LITERARY ADVERTISER ;
AND IN gray's monthly RECORD.
The Edinburgh, Leith, and Glasgow Advertiser, u-hicli is sent weekly by its publishers, to up-
wards of Ten Thousand principal firms, individuals, and public rooms, was established in the year 1 826,
-with the view of concentrating the advertisements of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and, as far as possible, those
of North Britain generally into a single channel. The inducements presented to advertisers were an over-
whelming circulation, as compared with any other advertising papers north of the Tweed ; and extreme
moderation in the charges for advertising, when compared with the publicity given, either localhj in and
near Edinburgh and Glasgow, or generally throughout Scotland, as well as in London, Liverpool, DubUn,
and many of the principal English towns. A steady and progressive increase of advertisements for nearly
eight successive years — now frequently treUing and quadrupling in number those contained in one number
of any other Edinburgh paper — has completely established the vast superiority of this sj-stem of advertising.
Gray's Monthly Record, or Companion to the North British Advertiser, owes its existence to the
non-existence of any law to prevent newspapers being published on unstamped paper, if issued only once
a-month, or at longer periods. The proprietors of the North British Advertiser have availed themselves
of this state of the law to publish a Montlily Index to all the advertisements passing through the North
British Advertiser ; as also, to afford, upon the same sheet, a verj' numerous local circulation, at an exceed-
ingly moderate charge, to such advertisements as may either be repeated therein from the North British
Advertiser, or inserted only in itself. — 7, North Bank street, \st May, 1834.

Observe —
1 st. That by " Cash" is meant — never entered in a book to the debit of the advertiser ; and that the
** Credit'''' charge is affixed to all advertisements which may be so entered, /or however short a period.
2rf, That the lines of both papers contain, on an average, about ten tcords each, being considerably
more words than are contained, in one line, in papers generally.
Sd, That whatever occupies the space of a line is charged as a line ; and, consequently, that in writing
advertisements, "with a view to economy, care shoidd be taken neither unnecessarily to di\"ide the matter
into numerous paragraphs, nor to indulge the fancy for displaying titles ; by which three or four lines are
sometimes occupied with but little more than as many words.
ith, That dealers of eveiy description, and public companies, such as insurance companies and others,
who are disposed to keep their names constantly before the public, are dealt with on liberal terms, on con-
dition of their gi\"ing an order for inserting advertisements for twelve successive months, or even for six
months certain. Ajid advertisements of ciiraordinary length, such as the proceedings and resolutions of
public bodies, lengthy catalogues of 'books, &c. are also objects of special contract.
