CLYDESDALE UPPER WARD SOCIETY.

This society was instituted in 1786, and now
possesses a capital of £1730. Its members, who
must be those connected by birth, parentage, or
marriage with one of the Upper Wards of Lanark-
shire parishes, or have resided therein for ten years,
are entitled to 8s. per week when confined to bed ;
5s. per week when unable to attend their employ-
ment ; and 3s. per week when superannuated. After
being on the roll of members for seven years, these
amounts are increased to 10s. 6d., 7s., and 3s. 6d.
per week, respectively; and the money so bestowed
last year amounted to £231 4s. The entry-money is
10s. 6d., and the quarterly payments range from
2s. Id. at 16, to 2s. lO^d. at 40 years of age.
GLASGOW KYRLE SOCIETY.

The object of this Society is to endeavour to im-
prove the condition of the poor hy bringing to bear
within their homes and places of meeting the elevat-
ing influences of natural and artistic beauty, and by
such means inspiring them with a tasi e for self-culture.
The Society is divided into the following sections —
(1) Music — Concerts are given in poor localities by
the choir ; secretary, Mr. A. P. Sheriff, 13 Athole
Gardens. (2) Decorations — The walls of infirmary
wards, mission halls, &c., are decorated by mural
paintings, gifts of pictures, &c. ; secretary. Miss C.
Henderson, 17 Belhaven Ten (3) Window Garden-
ing — The taste for flower growing is fostered among
poor children by the distribution of plants and seeds ;
secretary, Mrs. Bradock, 1 South Park Terrace,
Hillhead. (4) Sanitary aid — luformition on health
and sanitary subjects is given at mothers' meetings,
gu'ls' classes, &c. ; secretary, Mrs. Robertson, 8 Park
Street, East. (5) Housing of the Poor — To improve
the condition of the dwellings of the working classes
in the city ; Secretary, Miss M. Blackie, 1 Belhaven
Terrace.
Information as to membership, &c., may be obtained
from the hon. secretary or treasurer ; also from
Mr. John Honeyman, 140 Bath Street, and other
members of the committee, any of whom will be glad
to receive donations of money or works of art for the
Society.
EWING BEQUESTS.
Founded in 1860 by James Ewing of Strathleven.
The total amount of the bequests is £30,000, of which
£21,000, less legacy duty, has been paid. The in-
come is divisible — one-third among decayed Glasgow
merchants, one- third in educating, &c., their sons,
and the remaining one-third among their widows
and daughters. Income at present, about £660.

MISSION TO THE OUT DOOR BLIND FOR
GLASGOW AND THE WEST OF SCOTLAND
Has under its care 1505 blind persons, resident iti
•ilasgow and the counties of Lanark, Renfrew, Ayr,
Dumbarton, Argyle, and Bute. These blind persons
are sought out, visited at their own houses, taught lo
read, and provided with books in raised type free of
charge. The great majority being deprived of sight
at, or near, middle life, and being thereby rendered
unfit to follow their ordinary occupations, means are
used to find employment for them suited to their
altered circumstances, and the aged and infirm are
assisted by monthly aliments.

GROCER COMPANY OF GLASGOW.
This Society was instituted in 1789 for the purpose
of raising a fund to be applied towards the relief of
members, and the widows and children of members,
who might from misfortune require pecuniary aid.
Persons eligible for admission are grocers, or ina-
poiters of, or dealers in, one or other of the articles
after-mentioned, or is the managing Director of a
Company registered under the Companies Acts,
1862 to 1890, and carrying on the business of a
grocer or an importer of, or dealer in, one or other
of the following articles — namely, tea, coffee, sug4r,
spices, fruits, wines, spiriis, porter, soap, or ashes,
who reside or have their places of business in Glas-
gow or its suburbs. Tbe payment for admission is
Twelve Guineas for persons under forty ^ytars of
age, and Fifteen Guineas for persons of forty years
of age or upwai ds.

THE SLATE TRADE BENEVOLENT
ASSOCIATION.

The Society was instituted in 1888 ; its object is to
afford aid to such of its members or their widows as
may be in reduced circumstances. A single payment
of two guineas constitutes life membership.
GLASGOW MORAY AND BANFFSHIRE
FRIENDLY SOCIETY.
Instituted 1851.
To promote intercourse among natives of the two
counties, to encourage education therein, and to give
assistance in necessitous cases. Annual subscription,
