PREFACE.
The Publisliers of the Glasgow Post-Office Directory beg to express their thanks for
the liberal patronage bestowed on the work during the long period of sixty-two yeiKS.
It has ever been their desire that the information it contained should keep pace v'iuh
the progress and general requirements of the Second City of the Empire, and every
effort has been made to render it as accurate and complete as possible.
At the beginning of the book will be found a Map of the Environs of Glasgow,
the Almanac, Tide Tables, Phases of the Moon, &c. The City Chamberlain and
Mr. Henry, the City Assessor, have kindly supplied Statistics of the estimated Popu-
lation of the City and Suburbs, the Parliamentary and Municipal Voters for
1889-90, with the Parliamentary Divisions of the City and Members of Parliament,
also the Voters on Electoral Poll for School Board, and the Rental of Glasgow for
1890. At pages 75 to 98 an Alphabetical List of Streets is given; as a handy
guide to their situation the capital and small letters prefixed to each Street indicate
its position on the Map, and the number at the end its registration district.
In the large Map, from actual survey by J. Bartholomew, Esq., Edinburgh, great
care as usual has been taken in showing the various new streets that have been
formed since last issue. Eutherglen, Burnside, Cathkin Park and Braes, Cathcart
(Old and New), and Pollokshaws, are now also included, and the various underground
railway stations are marked by an asterisk. The Map is placed at the end of the
volume, so that it may lie open without interfering with the turning over of the pages.
In the Street Directory the number affixed to the name of each Street indicates
the Municipal Ward in which it is placed for Electoral purposes.- In order to make
the work as largely available as possible the various Suburban Districts around the
City are given, together with the members of Parliament for the Burgh or Division
in which they are placed, viz. : — Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Bothwell, Cambuslang?
Cathcart, Lenzie, Maryhill, Millerston, Milngavie, Pollokshaws, Eutherglen, Shettle-
ston, ToUcross, and Uddingston, and will be found following the City Directory
proper. Govan, Parkhead, and Shawlands are now incorporated with the General
Directory.
In the Appendix will be found useful details regarding Postal and Telegraph
arrangements, together with Local and General Intelligence ; and the Publishers beg
to thank the gentlemen connected with the various Institutions for their kindness in
supplying much useful information.
The printing has been done, as usual, by Mr. Mackenzie, Howard Street, and
the binding by Messrs. Gowans & Gray, Ann Street.
Post Office, Glasgow, May, 1890.
