PREFACE.
The Publishers of the Glasgow Post-Office Directory beg to express their thanks for
the liberal patronage bestowed on the work during the long period of fifty-eight years.
It has ever been their desire that the information it contained should keep pace with
the progress and general requirements of the Second City of the Empire, and every
effort has been made by the new Editor to render it as accurate and complete as
possible.
At the beginning of the book will be found the Weather Forecasts from June,
1886, to May, 1887, with Almanac, Tide Tables, Phases of the Moon, &c. The City
Chamberlain and Mr. Henry, the City Assessor, have kindly supplied Statistics of
the estimated Population of the City and Suburbs, the Parliamentary and Muni-
cipal Voters for 1885-86, with the Divisions of the City for Parliamentary purposes
under the new Redistribution Act, 1885, as well as the Voters on Electoral Roll for
School Board, and the Rental of Glasgow for 1886. At pages 73 to 95 an Alphabetical
List of Streets is given ; as a handy guide to their situation the number and letters
affixed to each Street indicate their position on the large Map, corrected up to date
from actual surveys by J. Bartholomew, Esq., Edinburgh, which is placed at the
end of the volume, so that it may lie open without interfering with the turning over
of the pages.
In the Street Directory the number affixed to the name of each Street indicates
the Municipal Ward in which it is placed for Electoral purposes. In order to make
the work as largely available as possible the various Suburban Districts around the
City are supplied, together with the members of Parliament for the Burgh or Division
in which they are placed, viz. : — Barrhead, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Bothwell, Busbyj
Cambuslang, Cathcart, Coatbridge, Govan, Lenzie, Maryhill, Millerston, Milngavie,
Parkhead, Pollokshaws, Rutherglen, Shawlands, Shettleston, Tollcross, and Uddingston,
and will be found following the City Directory proper.
In the Appendix will be found useful details regarding Postal and Telegraph
arrangements, together with Local and General Intelligence ; and the Publishers beg
to thank the gentlemen connected with the various Institutions for their kindness in
supplying much useful information.
The printing has been done, as usual, by Mr. Mackenzie, Howard Street, and
the binding by Messrs. Gowans & Gray, Ann Street.
