Quinquennial Division of Profits.
At the Thirteenth Division of Profits of the Society, made as at
ist March 1883, the profits realized in the preceding five years were
found to be .£278,684, of which ,£19,856 had been paid as Contingent
Prospective Bonus Additions to Policies which became claims
during the five years. The available surplus enabled the Directors
to declare New Bonus Additions to every participating Policy, at the
rate of £i, 5s. per cent upon the sum assured and former bonuses,
for each year it had been in force since the previous division of
profits as at ist March 1878. If the Bonus had been declared
simply upon the original sums assured, it would have been at the
rate of £i, 9s. per cent per annum. It varies, however, according
to the duration of the policy ; being at the rate of £2, us. id. per
cent upon policies issued in the first year of the Society, upon
which 52 years' premiums have been paid ; £2, 6s. 6d. per cent
upon policies of 47 years' standing, and so on.
All the policies issued in the first five years of the Society, which
are still in force, and on which no previous bonuses have been
surrendered, are now doubled in amount.
The total amount of the New Bonus Additions to Policies is
;6425,i57-

The Vested Bonuses may at any time be surrendered, in whole or in part, for
their present value, or applied to reduce the future premiums (for Life or for a
period of five years), as the Policyholders may desire.
In 1878 the Bonus was at the rate of £i, 2s. 6d. per cent per
annum, as against £i, 5s. on the present occasion, and the Directors
have every reason to believe that they will be able to declare in 1888
a Bonus at a still higher rate.
Settlement Policies
with special advantages are granted under the Married Women's
Property Act, free from all claims of creditors in the event of sub-
sequent insolvency.
