PREFACE.
The arrangement of the present issue is similar to that of last year. The Banking
Houses and Carriers' Quarters are again placed near the front (see pages 30 to 47).
The Greneral Directory includes Crosshill, Govanhill, Polmadie, PoUokshields East>
Pollokshields West, Kinning Park, Partick, Whiteinch, Hillhead, Kelvinside, Possil-
park, and Springburn,
The Suburban Directory includes Barrhead, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Bothwell,
Busby, Cambuslang, Cathcart, Govan, Lenzie, Maryhill, Millerston, Newton, Park-
head, Po'.lokshaws, Port-Glasgow, Eutherglen, Shawlands, Shettleston, Tollcross, and
Uddingston. Coatbridge has been given for the first time.
In the Street Directory (pages 601 to 837) the names of the intersecting
streets are given in ordinary type, and the number affixed to the name of the Street
denotes the Municipal or Parliamentary Ward ; and where a Street is divided into several
Wards, such as Buchanan Street, the numbers belonging to each Ward are given at
the top, viz. : from 1 to 275 are in Ward 8, from 2 to 210 in Ward 7, from 220 to
314 in Ward 5, and from 283 to 295 in Ward 10.
At pages 53 to 74 the names of the Streets are given with reference to their
situation, and the number affixed to each Street indicates the Eegistration district,
while the Italic letters prefixed to the name of each Street, Square, or Place, shows
its position on the Large Map, which has been enlarged and traced in Half-mile
Squares, with similar letters on the margin. Thus, to find out Montgomery Crescent
marked B a, take the line B from top or bottom of Map, and the line a from the sides,
and trace till they meet, and within that square the place wanted will be found. To
find College Station, marked G e on list, take G from top or bottom of Map, and e
from side, and trace in a similar way, and the Station will be found within the
Half-mile Square where G and e meet.
The large Map of Glasgow has again been placed at the end of the Directory. The
Map of the Environs is placed in front, and shows the Clyde west to Gourock.
In the Appendix will be found Tables with despatches and arrivals of Mails,
Lists of Post Towns, Post-Office Regulations, Telegraph information, Names of the
Members of Parliament for Scotland, Local Institutions, &c.
The publishers return thanks to the gentlemen connected with the various Local
Associations for their kindness in supplying much useful information. They also beg
to thank their numerous subscribers for the patronage bestowed on the work for
the long period of fifty-six years.
The printing has been done, as formerly, by Mr. Mackenzie, Howard Street, and
the binding by Messrs. Gowans & Gray, Ann Street.
