GENEEAL STATISTICS OF GLASGOW.
THE CITY OF GLASGOW,
The City Chamberlain estimated the population
of the City and Suburbs, at Midsummer of 1877, as
follows : — Total population situated within the par-
liamentary boundary, 538,000 ; outside of the par-
liamentary city, but now forming part of the munici-
pal city, 18,000 ; so that the municipal city of
Glasgow contained at midsummer of 1877 a popula-
tion of 556,000. The municipal city may be esti-
mated to have contained in the middle of 1878 a
population of 567,000.
We may therefore regard the population of the city
and its adjuncts as standing thus : — Municipal city,
middle of 1877, estimated population, as previously
stated, 556,000 ; suburban districts, at same date,
north side of river — Partick and Hillhead, 36,610 ;
Maiyhill and Milngavie, 20,060 ; Shettleston and
Tollcross, 7750 : total, 64,420. South side of river
— Govan, 42,565 ; Pollokshields, Kinning Park, and
Paisley road, 21,555 ; Crossbill, Langside, and Cath-
cart, 18,240 ; Shawlands, PoUokshaws, and Thomlie-
bank,13,525: total, 95,885. Thus the City of Glasgow,
including its connected and closely contiguous subur-
ban districts, represented, in the middle of 1877, a
united, population of as nearly as may be, 716,305.
