PREFACE.
The present issue, of the Glasgow Post-Office Directory has been prepared
with great care, and a number of changes introduced, which the Publishers hope
will be satisfactory.
The following places have been incorporated in the General, Street, and Trades : —
Govanhill, Crosshill, Strathbungo, Crossmyloof, Pollokshields, Partick, Whiteinch,
Kelvinside, Hillhead, Possilpark, and Springburn ; and the list of streets at pages
53 to 74, has been prepared with italic letters at the beginning of each line, as
an index to the streets, &c, on the Map, which has been traced in half-mile
squares, with similar letters on the margin at each side. Thus : Blythswood square
is marked E d\ and to find this on the Map, take the line E from top or bottom,
and the line d from the sides, and. trace till it meet, and within that square the
place wanted will be found. To find Park Circus, marked D c, trace in a similar
way, and the place will be found on the Map within the half-mile space. The
Map this year has been placed at the end of the Directory, instead of the begin-
ning, which will be found more convenient as it can be kept open while thei
Directory is being examined.
In the Street Directory, the names of the intersecting streets are again given
in ordinary type ; and a line or small dash indicates the position where each
street intersects.
The boundaries of the sixteen wards of the city for municipal and parliamentary
purposes are again given at pages 48 to 52.
In the Appendix will be found Tables with despatches and arrivals of mails,
Pillar and Wall Letter-boxes, Lists of Post Towns, Post-Office Eegulations, Tele-
graph Information, &c, Banking Houses and Branches in Scotland, Local Institu-
tions, Associations, &c.
The publishers return thanks to the gentlemen connected with the various local
institutions for their kindness in supplying much useful information. Also they beg
to thank their numerous subscribers for the patronage bestowed on the work for
the long period of fifty-two years.
The printing has been done, as formerly, by Mr. Mackenzie, Howard Street, and
the binding by Messrs. Gowans & Gray, Ann Street.
