The principal object of this society is to afibrd
pecuniary aid to indigent natives, or widows, or chil-
dren of natives, of these counties resident in or near
Glasgow. The subscription of £1 Is. per annum for
four years, or £4 4s. in one sum, constitutes mem-
bership to parties eligible by connection with any of
these counties ; and persons willing to be enrolled
are respectfully solicited to communicate with the
treasurer or secretary of the society, or any of the

A member of this society who has been 12 months
enrolled, on being incapacitated by disease, accident,
or infirmity, from following his usual avocation, is
entitled to receive £1 per week. On the death of a
member who has been 12 months enrolled, the so-
ciety pays £10 as funeral allowance. Annual meet-
ing in Glasgow on the fourth Friday of February. The
directors meet on the first Tuesday of each month.
THE GRAND ANTIQUITY SOCIETY
OF GLASGOW.
The objects of this society are the relief of its mem-
bers in infirmity or old age, and the securing of a pro-
vision to the widows of members in indigent circum-
stances. Persons eligible for admission to the society
are burgesses, who are also the sons and grandsons
either by the father's or mother's side of burgesses.
The entry-money is £2 3s. 6c?., excepting tliat for
the sons and sons-in-law of members, who are admitted
upon payment of the sum of £1 2s. 6d.

SOCIETY.

The society was instituted in the year 1806, and
the sphere of its operations includes the parliamentary
boundary of the City of Glasgow situated on the
south side of the river Clyde. The object of the
society is to afford pecuniary or other relief to the
natives and old inhabitants of the Barony of Gorbals
who are of respectable character ; have been in bet-
ter circumstances, but reduced to a decayed and
indigent state ; and who, not being otherwise suffi-
ciently provided for, stand in need of the society's
aid; but no one receives assistance from its funds
who is in receipt of parochial relief. Advanced age,
urgent necessity, and respectability of character are
indispensable. Length of residence, next to nativity
preferred ; but applicants must have one or other of
those qualifications. Non-residence at the time of
making application will not exclude from the benefits
of the society. No one is allowed to participate in
the benefits of the Society who is under fifty years of
age, unless labouring under permanent bodily infirmity.
The treasurer supplies forms of application for aid.
THE ST. GEORGE'S BENEVOLENT SOCIETY
IN SCOTLAND.

The society was instituted in the year 1844, and
has for its objects the assistance of English people in
poor circumstances, resident in Scotland, more espe-
cially the assisting the return to England of families
no longer able or likely to obtain maintenance else-
where. The membership consists of Englishmen, or
the children of English parents or parent, or the
husbands of English wives, and in order to qualify
for membership, a donation of not less than £3 3s.,
or an annual subscription of not less than 10s. 6d.
is necessary. The rules provide for an annual
meeting of the society being held on St. George's
Day, when the office-bearers for the ensuing year are
elected. Since its institution, the society has been
the means of doing much good, and the accumulated
funds now amount to between £700 and £800,
EWING BEQUESTS,
Founded in 1860 by James Ewing of Strathleven.
The total amount of the bequests is £30, 000, of which
£16,500, less legacy duty, has been paid. The in-
come is divisible — one-third among decayed Glasgow
merchants, one-third in educating, &c., their sons,
and the remaining one-third among their widows
and daughters. Income at present, about £660.
