without Permanent Deflection — a Test unprecedented in Anchor Proving.
From the "MORNING CHRONICLE," Quebec, Tuesday, December 2, 1873.
"I feel, Mr. Editor, that I have already trespassed too much on your valuable space, and far heyond the limits
which I assigned to myself in commencing, hut I really cannot conclude without making it public, that it is to the
Patent Anchor, known as ' Martin's Patent,' which had been provided for the Light Ship, that myself and crew owe their
safety . For it was that which enabled us to ride out the gale of the 18th, and saved us off the Goose Island Reef.
" THOMAS CONNELL, Captain, Mauicouagan Light Ship."
Copy of an Official Report of Captain THOMAS CONNELL, Manicouagan Light Ship,
To the Department of Marine and Fisheries, Quebec, Canada.
' On the 8th of August, finding that the Ship was not riding as easy as she should, and that there was a jerking or
surging on the anchor chain, I determined to heave up anchor in order to ascertain what was the matter. After
heaving in about 100 fathoms, I found that there were ten or twelve hitches in the bite of the chain, which I cleared,
and when I succeeded in sighting my anchor, ' Trotman's Patent,' which was only on the 11th August, I discovered
that there were two turns of the chain around the slock and the flues of the anchor. Had I not taken this precaution
before the stormy weather set in, it is possible that this circumstance might have caused the loss of the ship, myself,
and crew.
' I replaced this anchor with ' Martin's Patent Self-canting Anchor,' with which your forethought had provided the
Ship, and from that time till I left the Station, the vessel rode with ease and safety and clear anchor. I have already
alluded to the service rendered by this anchor off 'St. Denis' in coming to Quebec, and I will merely add that after 30
years' experience on board of ships of all sizes and tonnage, with every description of anchor, riding in strong tide-
ways, I must certainly give the palm to 'Martin's Patent,' for superiority in every respect to any I have ever tried. "
Martin's Anchor referred to weighs 25 cwt., and replaced an anchor of 60 cwt-, with the above result.
(Signed) " THOMAS CONNELL."
