PREFACE.
In issuing the forty-sixth edition of the Glasgow Post-Office Directory, the Publishers
beg to tender their sincere thanks for the support hitherto bestowed, and they trust
that the present Directory will be found equal, if not superior, to any of its predecessors.
An increase of names, to the extent of thirty-six closely-printed pages, over those of
last year, shows that the population of this city is rapidly increasing, and it will be
found that the Directory is keeping pace with the general progress.
In addition to the new plan of Glasgow, revised to date, Avill be found a new map
of the environs, by John Bartholomew, Esq., F.E.G.S., Edinburgh, showing the towns,
villages, and places of interest for ten miles to the east and west, and seven miles to
north and south of the city.
In the Street Directory the intersecting streets have been indicated by a line
thus _„„.„=___-. and by reference to the map their names can easily be ascertained..
In Argyle Street, St. Vincent Street, West George Street, &c,, the names of the
intersecting streets have been given, and, if approved of, this plan can in another year
be extended to all the streets.
In th-: Appendix, as well as in the front of the Directory, will be found useful
information, which would be more complete were it not for the early date at which
that portion of the work goes to press.
The printing has been done, as usual, by Mr. Mackenzie, and the binding by
Mr. Martin ; and, notwithstanding the increased expense in getting up the Directory,
its price has not been raised.
Post Ofpice, Glasgow, 28;^ May, 1873.
