OLD EEMINISCENCES OF aLASGOW
AND THE
WEST OF SCOTLAND.
BY PETER MACKENZIE.
Mr. Mackenzie, ■who was for many years Editor and Proprietor of the Glasgow Old Loyal Reformeri
Gazette, has been earnestly requested by numerous friends to bring out a volume or two of his Reminiscences,
from facts placed within his own knowledge, and never before published in any concise or authentic shape.
He therefore intends to begin with the extraordinary Historj-- of the Spy System pursued in Glasgow in the
days of Lords Sidmouth and Castlereagh, which he originally detected and brought to light many yearj
ago, leading to the remarkable State Trials of 1819-20 — to the dread Executions which then took place —
to the Expose of Richmond the Villain Spy — and to many other thrilling events ; including some remarkable
Trials in which Fraiicis JefEi'ey, James Moncrieff, and Henry Cocklbum, took part, with the present
Lord President, ^c.
From the Epitome of the Spy System he will go on to handle other topics — the materials and evidence
concerning which are exclusively in his own possession ; and being the oldest Newspaper Editor now alive
in Glasgow, or in Scotland, he ventures somewhat hopefully to think that he will be able to make the work
on which he has now entered peculiarly interesting to the present age.
