By WILLIAM JOHNSON, Esq., Assoc. Inst. C.E., Mem. Inst. Mech. Eng.
The year 1851 will be a memorable one in
the annals of the twin pursuits of Mechanics and
Engineering. From that epoch will future histo-
rians date the commencement of an unparalleled
impetus to that distinguishing feature of the Eng-
lishman — his aptitude for changing the forms of
matter, and directing nature's inorganic powers to
the performance of the drudgery of human life.
With the view, then, of preserving and fostering
the spirit of onward movement in the masses
engaged in Constructive Mechanics, the Publisher
has been induced to prepare the " Imperial
Cyclopedia of Machinery." The intention
of this Work is to afford the Mechanic and En-
gineer an opportunity of becoming possessed, at a
cheap rate, of a series of accurate representations
of some of the best Machinery now in use, with
all the latest improvements, including many of
the most important from the Great Exhibition.
They will be on a scale large enough for the
practical Mechanic to work from ; and being got
up under the immediate superintendence of emi-
nent practical Engineers, their fidelity in every
detail maj' be relied upon. Mr. Johnson's Essay
on the Steam Engine, and Historical Sketch of
tlie Railway's of Great Britain, will be found a
most valuable addition.
The Work will open with the important sub-
ject of Screw Propelling, giving an account of
the various schemes which have been brought forward, both in this countrj' and abroad, for pro-
pelling by a submerged helix or screw ; to which will be added, An Historical Account of the
Practical Introduction of the Screw to Ocean Navigation, illustrated by 70 Engravings of its
different forms, and a Series of large Plates, showing the various descriptions of Engines, as
constructed by the first makers, for giving motion to the screw.
To the whole will be added, a Treatise on a New Method of Perspective, applicable to Machinery,
accompanied by diagrams illustrative of the principles of Drawing, and two beautiful designs of
Marine Engines, drawn on a large scale to the angle of 45°. This method shows distinctly the
plan, side and end elevations, besides a considerable portion of the work which could only be shown
otherwise in detail. It conveys, at first sight, the object represented to the mind of the most inex-
perienced ; and, it is believed, will ultimately, in a great measure, supersede the necessity of making
expensive models.
The Work will be printed on fine Imperial Paper. Each Part will contain four pages Plates, and
four or eight pages Letterpress, and will be published on 1st and 15th of each Month.
SUPPLIED ONLY TO SUBSCRIBERS.
Printed and Published by William Mackp.nzie, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
