According to the Tontine principle referred to, the measure of a Policy's claim for
Profits increases at each Division, so that the party who protects his family by a Life
Assurance has, at the same time, the benefit of participating in the profits of the busi-
ness, according to his survivorship, — that is, the length of time he continues connected
with the Institution.
The following cases, taken from the Books, will tend to illustrate the system : —
On 4th March, 1854, A. B. died at the age of 20, having effected an Assurance of £150
on 1st August, 1853, when in perfect health. The sum assured has been paid to the
representatives ; and it may be observed that only One Year's Premium of £1, 4s. 8d.
■was paid to the Company.
On 4th October, 1854, C. D. died, aged 32, having effected an Assurance on his life for
£300, on 14th November, 1853, when he was in excellent health. His payment to
the Company was £8.
These two cases show how complete and satisfactory such a provision is from the
moment of a policy being effected. The following cases will further illustrate the bene-
fits of the system with reference more particularly to Participation in the Profits: —
On 13th February, 1854, E. F. died, aged 64. He effected an Assurance on his life in
1828for £300
And there was added by the Company from the Profits 218 14
Making the sum paid £518 14
On 20th March, 1854, died G. H., aged 57. He effected an Assurance on his life in
1829 for £995
And there was added by the Company from the Profits 629 16 8]
Making the sum paid £1624 16 8
Such examples could be greatly increased by quotations from the books, but the above
cases are sufficient to illustrate the great benefits and advantages of the svstem.
