ELUCIDATION OF THE PRECEDING TABLES.
Required the time of the sun's rising and setting at Glasgow, in latitude 55° 52' N.,
longitude 40° 16 "W., on May 15th, 1856.
The approximate time of the sun's rising and setting is —
Rising, 3 h. 58 m. Setting, 8 h. 2 m.
Longitude of time in Glasgow... + 17 -f- 17

The sun's declination reduced to these times is 18° 54' and 19° 4', and the polar
distances are 71° 6' and 7° 56'. The horizontal refraction, less sun's parallax, is
33' and 90° -f- 33' = Z. distance.
