GREAT EXHIBITION PRIZE MEDAL.
Patronised by the Lords of the Admiralty, the Governors of Greenwich Hospital, St.
George's, Guy's, and adopted exclusively by the French Government for' m all Public
Works.
ADVANTAGES :—
Healthfulness, Durability, TTnchangeableness, Purity of Colour,
Preservation of Materials, Cheapness.
WHITE-LEAD FORMS THE BASIS of almost every Paint, and when used gives
out poisonous exhalations, destructive to the constitution. The Lives of delicate and
aged persons are often sacrificed by inhaling its pernicious properties; whilst lingering*
disease and premature death attend those employed in its manufacture and use.
A sufficient substitute for White-Lead has for many years occupied the attention of
Scientific men, without their arriving at any practical result. This was eventually in
part obtained by Mons. Leclaire, at Paris, in 1846. Messrs. Crowley, White, and
Crowley now offer to Export Merchants and the Trade, a disinfecting agent in White
Zinc, perfectly free from all deleterious properties, of guaranteed PURITY (under
BRAND), EITHER IN THE DRY OR GROUND STATE.
(Certificate.)
Ansdale Street, Salt-house Dock, Liverpool, Aug. 23, 1852.
Gentlemen, — We are much gratified to find the last parcel of Oxide of Zinc so much
improved in body, and as the colour of the first parcel was very satisfactory, we see very
little difficulty in its way to more general adoption and use, far it certainly has, in many
respects, a decided advantage over White-lead in situations of severe test — contiguity to
bilge-water ; cesses ; wherever gases are evolved, &c. — and we may mention two cases
in point : the one was a stable and petit, and the other an apartment in an antiquated
building, exceedingly low, with the beams prominently crossing it. In both these
instances, it was customary to have them painted and whitewashed annually. The
workman employed was so ashamed of these at the usual time for renewing, that, hear-
ing of the peculiar properties of the Oxide of Zinc in resisting the action of foul air and
gases, he gave Zinc a trial, and the result was, on his employers going over the work
when it was supposed to require doing again, that it was deemed unnecessary. Your
Oxide of Zinc was that employed, and we have supplied it subsequently, but, of course,
time alone will confirm the result. The Zinc was used both in paint and dry, same as
Whiting or Paris White. — We are, Gentlemen, your obedient Servants,

This is to certify, we painted the Ship " Owen Potter" in June, 1851, with Zinc
Paint, manufactured by Mr. Langston Scott, of London, which quite suited our
expectation as to colour and durability, on her return from Calcutta in April last. We
also found in the Barque " Agnes" of London, that her cabin, ceilings, state-rooms, &c,
were not affected by the Steam of a Sugar Cargo, as had always been the case when
* White-Lead.— It is calculated that the use and manufacture of every thousand tons of
White-Lead produce, on an average, a hundred and twenty patients and five deaths.— The
Builder, October Sth, 1853.
