The Clioral Union was formed in 1855 by the

orchestra, it numbers about 500 members. The
meetings are held in the Lesser City Hall, South
Albion Stieet, on the evenings of Monday, Wednes-
day, and Thursday in each week during the season.
The general rehearsals, chorus and orchestra com-
bined, take place on Mondaj'S ; orchestra alone on
Thursdays ; part practisings of the chorus on Wed-
nesdays ; soprano and alto, tenor and bass, every
alternate week.
The object of the Union is the cultivation of a
taste for classical music, and for this purpose frequent
public performances are given, in addition to the
weekly meetings. The quahfications for membership
are, a good voice and ear, or knowledge of an instru-
ment, combined with the ability to read music at
sight. A committee meets monthly to test appli-
cants for admission, who must previously make
written application to the secretary. Gentlemen
members pay an annual subscription of five shillings.
Tickets in force for one year from date of entry.
Honorary members, subscribing one guinea and
a half per annum, are entitled to two reserved seat
tickets for each concert given during the year of their
membership ; those subscribing one guinea per an-
num receive two tickets for reserved benches in side
galleries. Both classes of subscribers have the pri-
vilege of attending all rehearsals, and their tickets
are in force for one year from date of subscription.
Last season a performance was given in the Cathe-
dral, chiefly illustrative of Scottish Psalmody and
ancient and modern English anthems. In November,
1862, Beethoven's " Engendi," and Rossini's " Stabat

gendi" was repeated, selections from Handel's " Israel 1
in Egypt," Haydn's " Seasons," and other classical
