as to Holland. To countries beyond, and directed to be forwarded
through Holland, the British postage must be paid, 8 /. under ^ oz.,
Is. 4^. under 1 oz., &c. Newspapers to such countries, \d. each.
Periodical works, not strictly Newspapers, may be sent, if prepaid and
open at the sides, at the rate of \d. under 2 oz., &d. under 3 oz., 8f/.
under 4 oz., and so on to 16 oz.
Honduras, payment obligatory, on the last day of every month, via
Southampton, Is. under h oz., 2s. under 1 oz., and so on. News-
papers, free.
Hong Kong, payment optional, via India, Southampton route, on the 1st
and 18th of each month, \s.Ad. under ^ oz., 2s. 8«'. under 1 oz. ; Mai'-
seilles route, on the 5th and 22d, 2s. 2d. Papers, 2d. by the former, and

up in Glasgow on the previous Thursday, Is. under ^ oz., 2s. under
1 oz., 4s. under 2 oz., &c.; and on the 5th and 22d of each month,
"via Marseilles, by tJie British Packet ;" unless either of these days fall
upon Friday, then the mail will be made up in Glasgow on the follow-
ing Saturday, Is. \0d. under ^ oz., 2s. 3d. under j oz., 4.s-. Id. under f
oz., 4s. 6c?. under 1 oz., 7s. 9c?. under Ij oz., &c. All p;iid letters are
sent by Marseilles, unless othenvise addressed. Newsp.ipcrs, free by
Southampton Packet; and via Marseilles, 3c?. each. To pi ices beyond
India, eastward of Calcutta, and not within the territory of the I'^ast
India Company (Ceylon excepted), the folloAving rates of postage are
levied : by Southampton Packet, Is. 4cZ., 2s. 8d., 5s. 4d, under ^, 1, and 2
oz, respectively, and so on ; and by Marseilles, 2s. 2f/., 2s-. 7d., 4s. 9f?.,
5s. 2f?'., 9s. Id., iinder ^, ^, |, 1, and 1^ oz. respectively. Papers, by the
former route — British Colonies, 2d. ; Foreign Possessio!-:, 4d.; ansl by
the latter route, 5cZ. These rates apply to all letters and p;ipers to and
from Australia, Bourbon, Cape of Good Hope, Chi la. Ilong Kong,
Java, Madagascar, Mauritius, New Zealand, Sumatra. a'i<l Viui Diem in's
Land. Letters, however, must be specially addressed '•/// India, except
to China, Hong Kong, Java, and Sumatra, which are invariably sent by
that I'oute, unless otlierwise addressed. As the Packet which conveys
the Indian mails of the 18th i;ia Southampton, and 22il vi/i Marseilles,
does not proceed to Bombay, but toiiches only at Madras smd Calcntta,-
letters addressed to Bombay itself, intended to be transmitted by this
line, must be specially addressed viaMadras or Calcutta, as they will otlier-
wise be detained, and forwarded by the Packet of the Ist, via South-
ampton, which conveys the mails for Bombay; or by Marseilles on ihe
5th, if paid for that route. On letters for places within the territory of
tlie East India Company, the payment is optional by Southampton.
The postage on all other letters to India, as well as on .dl letters ad-
dressed to countries beyond India (the Colony of Hong Kong except
