When paid to their destination, the British rate as given in the fore-
going instance must be added to the French rates, but it must be observed
the French rates are not uniform lilce the British, but vary according to
the distance from Calais ; and that the mode of charging is likewise diffe-
rent, the French post-office charging a single rate for each quarter of an
ounce.
To and through France.
Although Unpaid Letters can only be forvcarded to Places within
France, there are other Countries to which the Postage may be paid (if
the Sender should desire it), in whole or in part, as the case may be,
■viz. : — For Central Germany, Sardinia and Switzerland, Letters may
be paid to their destination. For Southern Italy, Letters may be paid
to the Italian Frontier of Sardinia. For the Mediterranean, Austria
and Venetian Lombardy, Letters may be paid through France to Hun-
inguen or Forbach. The Lists may be seen at the bar of the General
Office, Glassford Street.
