PREFACE.
The numerous inaccuracies and omissions which
characterized former publications of this description
in Edinburgh, have long and generally been the sub-
ject of complaint ; and rendered the publication of a
new and improved Directory of Edinburgh, Leith, and
Suburbs, a great desideratum ; and the very favourable
reception which the announcement of the present work
received, may be considered as an unequivocal proof of
the truth of this assertion.
In bringing forward the present improved Directory,
the Proprietors are unwilling to speak much of their
own exertions ; but this they may state, that they have
spared neither labour nor expense to unite early pub-
lication with as much completeness and accuracy as
the nature of such a work will admit; and they trust
that a comparison of the present with former publica-
tions of the same kind, will prove the surest test of
the extent of their efforts.
The Public will also be aware, that, in consequence
of the announcement of this work, a powerful stimulus
has been given to those interested in the former pub-
lications — a stimulus of which the Public will now reap
the full benefit, and without which, it is fairly to be
inferred, "o efforts would have been made by them in
the way of improvement.
Should the present publication realize the success
which the Proprietors have been led to expect, they
pledge themselves that their attention to accuracy
shall not relax ; and although they may alter the plan,
or vary the form, they hope to be enabled, in future
years, to present such additions and improvements as
will give it still higher claims upon the Public.
To the present Directory the Proprietors have added
a new plan of the City, containing the recent and
intended improvements.
