RATES OF POSTAGE, AND CONDITIONS OF TRANSMISSION.
INLAND LETTERS.
rates of postage to be prepaid are as

For a letter not exceeding 1 oz.,
„ exceeding 1 oz. but not exceed-

„ exceeding 6 oz. but not exceed-

„ exceeding 10 oz. but not exceed-
ing 12 oz., . . . 4d.
A letter exceeding the weight of 12 oz. is liable
to a postage of Id. for every ounce, beginning
•with the first ounce. A letter, for example, weigh-
ing V)etween 14 and 15 ounces must be prepaid
liftmen pence.
A letter posted unpaid is chargeable on delivery
with double postage; and a letter posted in suflSciently i
prepaid is chargeable with double the deficiency. Oi i
re-directed letters the charge for re-direction is the
same, whether prepaid or collected on delivery. i
No letter may exceed the dimensions of one
foot six inches in length, nine inches in width, and
six inches in depth, unless it be sent to or from one ;
of the Government offices.
COLONLAL AND FOREIGN LETTERS.
The rates of postage on letters to foreign countries
and the colonies are entered in the Table of Foreign
and Colonial Postage.
To some countries prepayment is compulsory.
Where such is the case, the letter ' c ' is prefixed w
the rates of postage ; prepayment being in all other
cases optional.
To some countries the whole of the postage cannot
be prepaid ; and in such cases the letter 'a' is pre-
fixed to the rates of postage, to indicate that an
additional charge is made on delivery.
