The Proprietors of the Edinburgh Post-Office Directory beg to return their grateful
acknowledgments for the encouragement with which their labours have hitherto been received
by the Public, and at the same time to express a hope that the efforts which they have this year
made to render their Publication extensively useful, will meet with similar approbation. No
labour nor expense has been spared to promote its utility ; the utmost care and attention have
been exerted to procure authentic information ; and whilst they trust that their zeal and
assiduity have not been fruitless, it will be their endeavour, in the future editions of the
book, to employ the opportunities afforded by their situation to collect every species of in-
formation calculated to prove useful to men of business, to merchants and traders, and to
the public in general. The Letter- Carriers possess facilities and advantages peculiar to
themselves for the preparation of a work of this nature : and as it is equally their interest
and their duty to deserve the favour of the public, they will use every honest and fair means
to attain so desirable an object.
*^* Copies of the I^Iap may b^ had by applying to any of the General Post Letter-Car-
riers, or to R. Grant and Son, Booksellers, 82, Prince's Street.
The letters on the Map refer to the parishes, and the figures to the municipal districts.
