'Post Office Glasgow directory' for 1897-1898

Illustration of an Edwardian woman seated at a typewriter

A wonderful result of Glasgow's Art Nouveau movement is the advert for W P Laidlaw & Son, typewriter suppliers in Glasgow's St Vincent Street.

Published in the 'Post Office Glasgow directory' for 1897-1898, this fine illustration embodies some of the city's key Art Nouveau features:

  • The merging of the human body into softly moving decorative lines
  • The stark contrast of the simple straight lines in the background
  • The incorporation of text as part of the image itself, designed in a font that can be closely associated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
