Scottish Song Index

A pilot project is under way at the National Library of Scotland to test the conversion of the Library's Scottish song card index into an online database.

The song card index is available in our George IV Bridge Building, and allows you to trace songs through their publication history. At the moment, it is the only way you can access information about individual Scottish songs from the significant 18th and 19th century music collections at NLS.

The pilot project has resulted in the pilot database, which you see here. You can search online for:

  • titles and first words
  • related names
  • tunes by means of notation code
  • keywords

The database will be further developed and completed once we have obtained funding for a large conversion and enhancement project.

What's available

Arranged by title, the pilot database covers the following sections of the index:

  • A – Aunty's
  • complete H section
  • S – She's fair
  • a selected cross-section through the alphabet

To see future enhancements to the index, search for 'Mary Scott' or 'The Lass of Peaty's Mill', where you will find links to the online library catalogue record and scanned images of the complete song.
