Notes |
The first Dutch edition of Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton's account of his second journey through Africa. Following in the footsteps of his compatriot Mungo Park, the naval officer Clapperton (1788-1827) was determined to find the course of the River Niger. He made two expeditions into the interior of West Africa, and this narrative records his second and final unsuccessful attempt, with various travelling companions including his manservant, Richard Lander. The expedition reached Sokoto in what is now north-western Nigeria, with Clapperton and Lander the sole European survivors. Detained there for several months due to warring tribes in the region, Clapperton succumbed to malaria, dysentery and depression. Lander survived and was able to return to England, bringing with him Clapperton’s own account of the expedition and his own journal. The Dutch edition is a translation of Clapperton's Journal of a Second Expedition into the Interior of Africa, which also included the text of Lander's own journal, first published by John Murray in 1829. |
