Notes |
A Bible in two volumes in a Scottish herringbone style binding of red morocco leather with extensive gold tooling on the spine and front and back boards. This acquisition adds to the Library’s leading collection of Scottish decorative bookbinding of the long 18th century. The provenance of this set is also of interest, having once belonged to David Brown. Brown (1782-1827) was an Edinburgh bookseller, the fifth of six sons of John Brown of Haddington, the celebrated, self-educated clergyman and author of the Self Interpreting Bible which was first published in 1778. The work bears the inscription “This Bible was the property of my much esteemed and deeply lamented kinsman and friend Mr David Brown, bookseller, and was presented to me by his widow Mrs Euphemia Ramsay-Brown. Oct. 15th 1827". |
