Notes

A translation from the French original thought to be published in Geneva in 1576. It is a Calvinist work, strongly against Mary and her family, and following the contemporary undercurrent in such literature that Catholicism replaces true devotion with a lust for power and sex. The latter influencing a passage that John D. Staines in his Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots (2009) described as "the most gratuitous attack upon Mary Queen of Scots found in sixteenth century English, as well as the one with the least basis in fact."

The book was bound for Thomas Wotton (1521-1587) with his gilt stamped arms on the front and back boards.
