RETIREMENTS, &c.
7. A Chaplain who has less than 4 years' service
and accepts a living, will be considered as desiring
to resign His Majesty's Service, and will not be
entitled to any retiring allowance, or to either half
or retired pay.
8. The scale of retirement for Chaplains accepting
Livings does uot apply to Chaplains appointed by
the Admiralty to Greenwich Hospital Livings; but
Buch Officers, provided thoy have completed 10 years'
service, are to be placed on the Retired List with the
retired pay they may have earned by service, accord-
ing to the scale of retirement applicable to them at
the date of their appointment to such Living.
9.— (a> All Chaplains to be allowed, at the dis-
cretion of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service at the expiration of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 16
years' service, with gratuities according to the scale
laid down in the Regulations.
(6) If a Chaplain is not retained by the Admiralty
after 4 years' service, a gratuity of £600 may be
awarded to him.
(o) The privilege of withdrawal on these terms will
be allowed, as a rule, only when an Officer is unem-
ployed or serving at home. Under special circum-
stances, however, it may be permitted In the case of
an Officer serving abroad, provided he is prepared to
pay, if necessary, the cost of his passage home and
that of the Officer appointed to relieve him.
id) Officers are to give six months' notice of their
wish to withdraw on these terms.
IXa —Instructor Captains.
To be retired at the age of 55. Optional retirement
to be allowed, at the discretion of the Admiralty, at
the age of 40 or over.
The new ages for compulsory retirement to be
worked down to as follows:

have elapsed since their last service, and to be retired
at any age, at the discretion of the Admiralty.iffound

3 To have the option, at the discretion of the
Admiralty, of retiring after 12, 15, or 20 years' service,
with gratuities or retired pay according to the scale
laid down in the Regulations.
4 Officers entered after 29th January, 1900, who
may be found to be inefficient and unsulted for their
Bperial duties during the first twelve years of their
service to be retired at the discretion of the
Admiralty, with gratuities according to the scale
Laid down in the Regulations.
XI,— Medical Officers.
1. Surgeon Rear-Admirals.
(a) To be retired at the age of 60, and to be retired
at any age at the discretion of the Admiralty, If found
physically unfit to serve.
2. Surgeon Captains to be retired at the age of
56, and to be retired at ny age at the discretion of
the Admiralty, if found physic jlly unfit to serve.

6. Medical Officers to be retired at any age, so soon
as Ave years have elapsed since their last service, or.
In the case of Officers entering the Navy, or promoted
to a higher rank subsequent to the 9th October, 1903,
so soon as three years in any one rank, or four years
In any two ranks combined, have elapsed since their
last service.
6. A Surgeon Lieutenant who, on attaining 8 years'
seniority in that rank, has failed to pass the
examination for the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-
Commander, to be compulsorily retired with such
gratuity as the Admiralty may see flt to award,
but not exceeding £5oo. This rule not, how
ever, to apply in cases where. In the opinion of the
Admiralty, failure to qualify Is due to unavoidable
circumstances, nor to Surgeon-Lieutenants who
entered the Royal Navy prior to bhe first day ot
July, 1911, and who elected to receive pay at the
rates hitherto in force.
7. Voluntary retirement and withdrawal to be-
allowed as follows :
(a) K^ry Officer to have the option, subject to the
approval of the Admiralty, of retiring, after 20 years'
servii e, on the scale of Retired Pay provided
in the Regulations, or on the scale of gratuities pro-
vided tuerein, if he is not eligible for Retired Pay.
(6) At the expiration of 8, 12, or is years'
service, every Officer to be permitted, subject to the
approval of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service, receiving a gratuity on the scale laid
down in the Regulations.
The name of an Officer so withdrawing will he
removed from the List of the Navy, with which
all connection will then be severed.
(o) An Officer who has served for four years ( exel ud-
Ing time in a Civil Hospital) to be allowed, at the
discretion of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service with a gratuity of £500, but Officers so
withdrawing will be required to Join the Reserve;of
Medical Officers, under the conditions laid down for
that Reserve. (See page 867.)
