REGULATIONS FOR THE SPECIAL RESERVE OP OFFICERS
OF THE ROYAL MARINES.
{Established by Order in Council of the \Uh August, 1918.)
A Reserve of Officers, Royal Marines, to be called
the Special Reserve of Officers, Royal Marines,
has been established under the following regula-
tions : -
1. The Reserve will consist of^uch numbers as
may he determined, from time to time, between the
Admiralty and the Treasury.
•J. Appointment — The following will be eligible for
the Special Reserve:—
fa.) Officers who have held Temporary Com-
missions in the Roy.l Marines under the
rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
(6) Substantive Warrant Officers, Classes 1 and 2,
and Non-Commissioned Officers, who have
been granted Temporary Commissions
during War.
c Warrant Officers, Class I, who on discharge
to pension arc recommended by their Com-
manding Officers as suitable to hold Com-
missions in I'ase of emergency.
(d) Gentlemen specially appointed from civil
life, who must:—
(1) Have qualified at an Army or Royal
Marine Entrance Examination, or have
a " leaving ceniHcate," or
(2) Have passed Matriculation Examination
of a University. Gentlemen will not be
entered from civil life until after the
termination of hostilities.
3. Medical Examination.— Candidates for appoint-
ment to the Spe ial Reserve must pass the Medical
Examination laid down, and t' ose appointed under
Paragraph 2 (d) above must be between 18 an i 26 years
of age on appointment. All must be British-b rn
Subjects.
4 Seniority— Temporary Officers appointed will
be placed in the Special Reserve in the rank, and
with the seniority last held by them during Service
with the Corps.
Those appointed from Warrant Officer will be
granted Commissions as Lieutenant, Royal Marines,
in the Special Reserve, with seniority from date of
appointment.
Gentlemen appointed from civil life will be granted
Commissions as Second Lieutenant in the Special
Reserve, will be on probation for 6 months, and will
he coufluned only on corn.plettng the probationary
course of training laid down on appointment.
5 Uniform.— Special Reseive Officers will be en-
titled to wear the uniform of Officers of the Royal
Marines as laid down for Retired Officers, Koyal
Marines, and as published in the Quarterly Navy
List.
6 Special Rcservo Officers must report themselves
to 'the Secretary of the .Admiralty, In writing, in

7. Liability.— Speaiu' Reserve Officers will In 1 liable
to be called up for immediate and continuous service
at home or abroad at the time when a national
emergency appears, in the opinion of the Admiralty,
to be imminent.
8. Compu'sory and voluntary training.— Officers ap-
pointed under paragraph 2 id) above will be attached'
during a period of six months to a Royal Marine
Division lor training.
All Officers of the Special Reserve will be required
to undergo 14 days' training annually, unless
specially exempted from such training in any year
by the Adjutant-General.
They may also be allowed to come up for voluntary
courses not exceeding 42 days in any one year.
9. Pay and allowincs. — Pay during training, oi
when recalled to service, will be at Mich rales ae
may be agreed upon between the Treasury and the
Admiralty.
10. Outfit— On appointment an outfit allowance of
£30 will be granted on condition that tho Offioei
refunds one quarter for eaeh year short of fuur, if he
is removed from the Service witnln four years foi
whatever cause, subject to waiver in whole or in
part in special circumstances at the discretion ol
the Admiralty.
On being called up for service Officers will be
granted an allowance of £60 to include Camp Kit,
but not to include any expense incurred in respect
of Tropical Outfit.
An Officer who was commissioned or called ur
during War, and received an outfit gratuity, will not
receive a further grant of £30 on appointment to the
Reserve, but will be granted a special allowance of
£10 for provision of Mess Kit, &c, half to he
refundedif the Officer does not complc etwo years,
in Keserve owing to reasons within his own control.
A refund of b ratuity will not he required in eases
where an Officer who has received the £30 grant is
called up for service i efore completion of four years,
or wher.-, if he has received the £10 grant, he is
called up before completion of two years.
11. Widow's pension and compassionate allows
anoes.— Officers who may receive hurts or wounds on
Active Service will receive gratuities or pensions on
the scale applicable to Officers of corresponding
rank tin the A ctive List, and Widows, Children and
other Depondent Relatives of Officers who die while
on Service with lhe Corps will be eligible for
penslo s, gratuities, and compassionate allowances,
at the Kilt's, and subject to the conditions, from
time to time prescribed for the btneflt of the
Widow, Children or other Dependent Relatives ol
