REGULATIONS FOR S UPPLEMENTA KY FIRST
APPOINTMENTS IN THE KOYAL MARINES.
Admiralty,

I.— APPOHriMENTS AS PBOBATIOIfAET SECOND
LlEXTTENAlfT.
1. Appointments as Probationary Second Lien-
tenant Royal Marines will be oSered annually to
Candidates •who may pass successfully a competitive
examination and be otherwise qualifled as detailed.
2. The number of appointments each year will
vary according to the requirements of the SeiTlce,
and notice thereof will be published about three
months before the examination.
3. The examination of Candidates will be con-
ducted by the Civil Service Commissioners In the
month of June as specified in Section III. The
examination will be held in London, and such other
centres as the Commissioners may appoint. The
fee for the examination in London will be 21. and at
any other centre 31., in addition to any local fees
The oral and practical parts of the examination will
be held in London only.
i. Every Candidate for examination must make
application to the Secretary of the Admiralty not
later than the 1st of April of the year of examina-
tion.
5. Candidates must be unmarried. The limits of
ago will be from 17 to 19. Candidates must have attain-
ed the age of 17 and must not have attained the age
of 19 on the first of .lune of the year of examination.
6. Candidates will be required to present them-
selves at the Admiralty, where they will be separately
Interviewed before they are admitted to compete at
the examination. Those admitted tci compete will
be given the necessary forms, after the interview, to
enable them to make application to the Civil Service
Commissioners to be examined.t
7. A Candidate must be of pure European descent
and the son either of natural-born British subjects
or of parents naturalised in the United Kingdom.
In doubtful eases the burden of clear proof will rest
upon the Candidate. He must also produce a certifi-
cate of his ability to swim, and a certificate of birth.
8. Successful candidates will be required to under-
go an examination by the Medical Director General
of the Navy as to their physical fitness for
appointment.
The physical requirements are precisely the same
as those for commissions in other branches of the
Koyal Navy (see page 2342), except that in addition
Candidates must be at least S-lt. 5-ins. in height.
9. Parents or guardians are required to make an
Ofllcer a private allowance of at least 60!. a year until
his pay amounts to 7s. 6d. a day (i.e., for two years),
and of 46i. a year from that date until he is in receipt
of lis. a day {i.e., during an additional period of from
two to tliree j'ears).
They must further undertake to provide him with
the outfit required on appointment as Probationary
Second Lieutenant, and also the additional uniform
authorised on receiving his commission.
tBy arrangement between the Admiralty and the
War Office a Candidate who is admitted to compete
in the examinaiion for a Supplementary First
Appointment in the Koyal Marines may, if he so
desires, and provided he fulfils all the necessary
conditions, present himself at the same time for
admission to the tioyal Military Academy, Woolwich,
or Royal Military College, Sandhurst, or for special
entry as a Naval Cadet, in which case he must
express definitely his order of preference* before the
examination has begun. For particulars of the
conditions of entry to the Royal Military Academy
and the Royal Military College, application should
be made to the Secretary, Cl»ll Service Commission.
♦Following the Army Regulations, a Candidate
may say that if he is not among the first (so many)
successful competitors for the Royal Military
Academy or the Royal Military College (as the case
may be) he will elect for a Supplementary First
Appointment In the Royal Marines.
II.— Conditions of Sbevick.
10. The Candidates selected after examination will
oe appointed Probationary Second Lieutenants In the
Royal Marines. Their seniority will be that of the
order in which they were placed by the Examiners.
11. Corps Nomination. -One appointment in the
Royal Marines will be given annually to the son of a
combatant Officer of the Royal Marine Forces < eoom-
mended to His Majesty by the Lords Commissioners
of the Admiralty.
In the selection for this appointment preference
will be given—
(a) To sous of Officers who have been killed in
action or have died of wounds received in
action within six months of such wounds
having been received, or from illness brought
on by fatigue, privation, or expossure, incident
to active operations before an enemy, within
six months after having been first certified to
be ill ; or—
(b) To sons of Officers who have attained the sub-
stantive rank ofMajoror Lieutenant-Colonel,
and have performed long and distinguished
service.
This appointment is contingent on the nominee
qualifying in the entrance examination and showing
a competent knowledge in the subjects Mathematics
and Science.
12. Period of Proftaftore.— Officers will be con-
sidered as on probation until they have completed
all their courses of instruction and training and
have been successful in all the examinations herein-
after mentioned
13. Removal from the Service.- Ot&ce,Ts ■viho fail In
any examination will be removed from the Service
unless reasonable gi'ouiids tor a second trial can be
proved. They are also liable to be discharged at any
time for unsatisfactory conduct.
14. Date of Com.missions — Commissions as Lieu-
tenant Royal Marines will be granted to Officers
after passing the final military examination. They
will be posted to the Royal Marine Artillery or Royal
Marine Light Infantry accordingto the requirements
of the Service, but will be on one general list for
seniority and promotion in the Corps.
15. The final order of seniority of Officers will be
determined by the results of all their professional
(naval and military) examinations during the pro-
bationary period of their service.
16. The higher classes of certificates in the final
examinations entitle Officers to accelerated increase
of pay.
* III.— Subjects oe Examination.
17. The subjects of examination are as follows :—
Class I. Marks.

All the subjects in Class I. must be taken up.
Only one of the subjects in Class II, may be taken
up, and it this subject is a language, it must be
diflerent from the language selected in Class I.
In addition to the above-named subjects. Candi-
dates may take up freehand draw'ng, to which 400
marks will be allotted, but from these marks such
deductions will be made as will prevent indifferent
draughtsmanship from receiving any credit.
Cadets from the Officers Training Corps who are in
possession of Certificate "A." or are certified by the
Officer Commanding the Contingent to have been
efficient during the two years immediately preceding
the examination, and to have attained a standard
equal to Certificate " A" as laid down In the Officers
Training Corps Regulations, Appendix 3, will be
allowed to rec^ ive 400 marks additional to he above.
