ENTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.

34. At the expiration of their active service
officers will be eligible to rei-eive a gratuity depend-
ing on the length of their service at the rate ot loOI.
for each completed year of service, including their
probationary period. This pratuity will be paid to
tliem on the expiration of their active service period,
35. An officer retired at his own request, or for
physical unfitness due to causes beyond his own
control, may be awarded such gratuity as the
Admiralty think fit, not exceeding 1502., for each com-
pleted year of service (Including probationary
service).
(Gentlemen entered lor temporary service are not
ellgltiltj for the gratuities stated in paragraphs 34
and 35.)
36. Officers of the Royal Naval Air Service injured
whilst flying, either on duty or wheb undergoing a
course of instruction at one ot the Instructional
Establishments, or privately with the permission of
the Admiralty, will be eligible lor pensions and
gratuities under tlie same conditions and on the
same scales as in the case of other offl^-ers of the
Military Branch of the Koyal J\ ax^ of their corres-
ponding ranlv wounded in action. Officers injured
on duty, but not while actually flying, will be treated
as regards wounds, pensions and gratuities in the
same manner as officers ol corresponding ranli in the
Military Branch injured on duty, but not in action.
37. The widows and children ot officers dying
whilst in the Royal Naval Air Service will, suljject
to the completion of the necessary period ot com-
missioned service on the active list, be eligible for
pensions and compassionate a lowances under the
same conditions and on the same scales as officers
ot corresponding rank in the Military Biancli of the
Royal Navy; but in the event of an officer's death
being attributable to an injnry sustained whilst fly-
ing, either on duty or when undergoing a course ol
instruction at on i of the Instructional Establish-
ments, and occurring within seven years ot the date
of such injury, the award of pensions, gratuities or
compassionate allowances to the officer's widow and
children or other relauve will be made. Irrespective
ol the length ot service, undt r the conditions apullc-
able to the case ot officers of corresponding rank in
the Military Branch of the Royal Navy killed In
action. In the event of death resulting from an
injury sustained on duty, but not whilst flying, any
pensions and allowances awarded to dependent
relatives will be on the scale and subject to the
conditions laid down lor officers ot their correspond-
ing rank in the Military Branch, whose deaths are
attributable to injuries received on duty, but not in
action.
38. Probationary Plight Officers will, it injured
whilst flying, either on duty or when undergoing
a course ol instruction at any ot the Instructional
Establishments, or privately with the permission
of the Admiralty, be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under the sane conditions and on the
same scales as subLieutenants, Royal Navy, wounded
in action, and in the event ol death occurring as the
result of such Injury within seven years, pensions,
&c., will be awarded to the officer's widow and chil-
dren or other relative under the conditions applicable
in the case ol Sub-Lieuteuants, Royal Navy, killed
in action or dying of wounds received in action.
Probationary Flight Otllcers, it injured on duty
but not whilst flying, will be awarded pensions and
gratuities on the scales and subject to the conditions
laid down tor Suh-Lieutenants, Royal Navy, injured
on duty, but not in action. In the event ol death
resulting Irom an injurj' sustained on duty but not
whilst flying, any pensions and allowances awarded
to dependent relatives will be on the scale and sub-
ject to the conditions laid down tor Sub-Lieutenants,
Royal Navy, whose deaths are attributable to
injuries received on duty, but not in action. But
in the event ot a Probationary Flight Officer dying
during his period olprobation from natural causes no
pension or compassionate allowance will be granted
to the widow, children, or other relatives ol the
officer.

1. Direct Entry Officers.— Oi\ entry, selected candi-
dates will he appointed Probationary Observer
Officers, R N. After qualification in theoretical
and practical instruction, they will be advanced
to Observer Sub-Lieutenant, R.N. Observer Sub-
Lieutenants will be eligible f orproraotion to Observer
Lieutenant, to Observer Lieut.-Commauder after
eight years, &c. in the same way as other Officers,
R.N., in the Royal Naval Air Service.
2. Existing R.N. V.R. Officers serving as Observers
will be given seniority in the new ranks as from the
respective dales on which they were considered to be
lully qualified, but without effect on pay in the case
ol Officers holding temporary commissions. They
will not, however, be placed on the new rates ol pay
before Ihe 2nd April, 1917. Observers now under
training will be graded as Observer Sub-Lieutenants
as Irom the date ol qualification, and whilst under
training their title will be changed to "Probationary
Oljserver Officers."
3. The pay and allowances ol Observer Officers will
be as follows :—
Probationary Observer Officers, 7s. 6d. a day,
and, in addition, 3s. per day tor each day on
I which they are required to make ascents.
' Observer Sub-Lieutenants and Officers ot higher
• rank, pay ot corresponding rank in the Royal
Navy, and, in addition :—
Officers qualified in Wireless Telegraphy,
5s. a day risk pay, together with 3s. a day
skill pay, both payable continuously.
Officers not qualified in WirelessTelegraphy,
5s. a day risk pay, payable continuously.
4. Observer Officers will be eligible lor command
ol Air Stations in the same way as Flight Officers
are at present.
5. Warrant Oncers.— Warrant Officers under train-
ing tor service as Observers will receive the pay ot
tbeir rank, and, in addition, 2s. a day lor each day
on which they are required to make ascents. On
qualification as Observers they will be transferred
tiom the Royal Navy, and given either acting or con-
Hrmedrankas Warrant Officers, second grade, with
the pay ot the rank and the following allowances:—
Warrant Officers qualified in Wireless
Telegrapliy 3s. per day risk pay, together
I with Is. per day skill pay, both payable con-
tinuously.
Warrant Officers not qualified in Wireless
Telegraohy 38. per day risk pay, payable con-
tinuously.
6. General. Probationary Observer Officers and
Warrant Officer Observers will graduate under
similar conditions to ti ose governing the graduation
of Probationary Flight Officers.
Graduation will depend upon qualification in the
following subjects :—
(i) Wireless telegraphy,
(ii) Signals,
(ill) Seamanship and navigation.
{Intelligence.
Photography.
Aircraft generally.
(V) Gunnery.
Officers will be required to obtain 85 per cent, ol
marks in any group of subjects to qualify lor a 1st
class certificate lor that group, and 60 per cent, ol
marks will be the minimum necessary lor qualilying
in that group.
Officers will be allowed to count halt a month's
time for eacli 1st class certificate obtained, except in
the ease of group 1, lor which one month's time will
he given. An officer who obtains five 1st class cer-
tificates will thus gain three months' time.
An officer who fails in any group ot subjects will be
gi'-en further instruction and will be re-examined
aftPr one month; officers who fail in any group
cannot gain time by obtaining 1st class certificates
in other groups.
An officer's seniority as Observer Sub-Lieutenant
or Warrant Officer Observer will date from the date of
graduation, except in tlie case ot officers allowed to
count time tor 1st class Cf rtificates, whose s niority
will be antedated in accordance with the amount of
time gained.
Continuous risk pay will be payable Irom the date
of graduation only, notwithstanding that an officer
may have gained time.
