PHYSIC A]. REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES FOR
COMMISSIONS IN THE ROYAL NAVY.
With a view to preventing Candidates who may he
physically unfit for His Majesty's Service from in-
curring the inconvenience and expense of preparing
for commissions in the Royal Navy, it is suggested
that they undergo examination by the medical
adviser of the family, or any other qualified medical
practitioner, to whom the following list of defects
which cause rejection may be submitted forguidance.
It is to be understood that this privato examina-
tion is merely suggested as a guide for intending
Candidates and to lessen the chances of disappoint-
ment, and that it is by no means intended to take
the place of, or to influence in any way, the regular
Official Physical examination.
1. A weak constitution, imperfect development,
physical weakness, either hereditary or from chronic
disease, wounds, or injuries.
2. Skin disease, unless temporary or trivial.
3. Malformation of the head, deformity from
fracture or depression of the bones of the skull, im-
paired intellect, epilepsy, paralysis, or impediment
of speech.
4. Blindness or defective of vision, imperfect per-
ception of colours, fistula lachrymalis, or any chronic
disease of the eyes or eyelids. Candidates for Naval
Cadetships must possess full normal vision as de-
termined by Snellen's tests, each eye being separately
examined, for Candidates for other branches of the
Royal Navy, full normal vision is not required, but
any defect of vision must be due to errors of refrac-
tion which can be corrected to normal by glasses,
and vision without glasses must in any ease be
not less than G/60 with each eye, and the candidate
must also be able to read D=0,6 of Snellen's tost
types.
5. Impaired hearing or discharge from one or both
ears or any disease of the external, middle, or internal
ear.
6. Disease of the bones of the nose, or of its
cartilages, nasal polypus, or disease of the naso-
pharynx.
7. Disease of the throat, tongue, palate, or tonsils,
many unsound teeth.t unhealthy gums, disease of
the glands of the throat or neck, external cicatrices,
if at all extensive, and especially if adherent.
8. Functional or organic disease of the heart or
blood vessels, deformity or contraction of the chest,
or any symptom of lung disease or tendency thereto.
9t Undue swelling or distension of the abdomen
obesity, disease or enlargement of the abdominal
organs. Rupture, weakness or distension of the
abdominal rings; any disease of the bladder or in-
continence of urine.
10. The existence of any defect of th" genital
organs, or of varicocele when it clearly forms, or is
likely to form, a serious impediment to the efficient
performance of duty, e.g., when it is associated with
varicose veins or piles.
11. Paralysis, weakness, impaired motion or de-
formity of the upper or lower extremities, from
whatever cause; a varicose state of the veins,
especially of the leg. Bunions, distortion or mal-
formation of the hands, feet, fingers, or toes.
12. Distortion of the spine, of the bones of the
chest, or pelvis, from injury or constitutional defect.
No person will be admitted into His Majesty's
Service unless he has been vaccinated. Re-vaccina-
tion will also be required if considered necessary.
t i.e.— Seven teeth defective or deficient in persons
under 17 years of age on the date of entrv, ten de-
fective or deficient teeth in persons above the age of
17— a tooth being considered as defective when it
cannot be made permanently serviceable hv dental
repair. Credit is also given for teeth which have not
erupted. Candidates must, however, possess some
sound opposing molars and incisors. The numbers
given above are intended as a general guide, and are
not necessarily strictly adhered to, provided the
general condition of the teeth is good.
ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE.
REGULATIONS FOR THE SPECIAL ENTRY OF OFFICERS INTO THE
ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE.
1. The following regulations are for the admission
of candidates from civil life into the Royal Naval
Air Service for service for a limited number of
years.
2. As a general rule candidates for admission
must not be more than 25 nor less than 17 years
8 months of age on date of application.
3. Employment in the first instance will be for
four years, after which period officers entered under
these regulat'ons will pass into the Reserve for a
further period of four years' service, unless their
term of active service is extended or renewed. On
completion of the first year of their pngagement they
may, if considered suitable, ba allowed to extend
their original engagement to a total of 6 years' con-
tinuous service; after 4 years' service to a total of
8 years; and after 6. years' service to a total of lOyears ;
or alternatively they may be permitted to renew their
engagement on its completion in the ordinary course.
The Admiralty reserve the right of offering further
continuous service after 10 years, if their Lordships
see fit to do so. In all cases active or continuous
service will be- followed by 4 years' service in the
Reserve. At present officers are only ente-ed fortbe
period of the war, a"d no applications for transfer
to the permanent list can be considered until the
termination of hostilities.
4. The servic° will consist of employment in con-
nection with any type of aircraft in any part of the
world, either ashore or afloat.
6. Candidates selected will he entered as Pro-
bationary Flight Officers, Royal Navy, and will be
granted commissions as Plight Sub-Lieutenants
when dulv qualified.
6. Applications for admission should be made
to the Director of Air Services, R.N. Air Dept.,
Air Board Offices. Londou, W.C. 2. The form of
application is to be filled in by the parent or
guardian of the candidate, if he is not above the
age of 21. These forms may be obtained from the
Director of Air Services.
7. Candidates must bo of pure Europ»an descent,
and the sons of natural horn British subjects, in
doubtful cases the burden of clear proof will rest
upon the candidate.
8. No nomination is required.
9. Applicants who satisfy these conditions will be
invited to appear before an Air Service Committee,
who will nter>iew each candidate, and examine
credentials, which will have been f- rnished before-
hand by the candidate. Detail" of the credentials
required will hegivenin the application form referred
to above. They will include report" from the head-
master of the last educational establishment the
candidate attended, from persons under whose
authority the candidate may ha-e been during the
preceding several years, or from persons who are well
acquainted with the character of the candidate.
The Committee will decide therefrom, on the "Hit-
ability or otherwise of the candidate with regard to
his abilities and general character; and will submit
their recommendations to the Lords Commissioners
of the Admiralty for decision.
10. Cand T date'- willbe required tonassat the same
time a medical examination according to the pre-
scribed regulations as to their physical fitness for the
Naval Air Service.
11. Every randidate mu»t be in good health and
free fro" any physical defect of body, impediment of
speech, defect of vision or hearing, and also from any
predisposition to consti ntiona) or hereditary diseaso
or weakness of any kind, and be in all respects well
