SPECIAL ENTRY OF NAVAL CADETS.

I definitely hl9 order of preference* before the
j examination has hegun. For particulars of the con-
ditions of entry to the Royal Military Academy and
Royal Military College, apnlication should be made
to the Secretary, Civil Service Commission.
Regulations for Supplementary first appointments
In the Koyal Marines may he obtained from the
Secretary of the Admiralty. (See page 864.)
7. A list of successful candidates in order of merit
will be published by the Civil Service Commission.
' 8. Successful Candidates who are the sons of
Officers of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or Army,
who have been killed in action, or have died of
wounds received in action whether afloat or ashore,
or have died through thede traction of their ship, or
have been drowned or have suffered other violent
death due directly and wholly to War service, or
have died of disease attributable to active service,
may be appointed as King's Cadets.
King's Cadets will be entitled to the following
privileges in cases where the Admiralty are of
opinion that substantial help is needed towards the
expenses of their Naval training : —
(1) The grant of an outfit allowance, of £10 on
first entry.
(2) The remission of private allowance and
tuition allowance.
In cases where the above conditions are fulfilled
by Cad its, Midshipm n or Acting Sub-Lieutenants
already in tie Service, the Admiralty may, at their
discretion, authoriso the remission of all future
payments in respect of private allowance and
tuition allowance.
King's Cadets will he eligible for Compassionate
Allowances as prescribed by the Regulations, but
will not receive the Educational Mlowance author-
ised by the Order in Council of the 29th February,19l8.
9. Successful Candidates will be anoointed as
Cade's to undergo a course of training for a period
of ti years. During this period they will be accom-
modated on hoard a cruiser, parij of the instruction
boing given on board and part on shore.
On completing this course, and passing out satis-
factorily, they will join the Fleet as Midshipmen.
They will become Midshipmen later in age than
Cadets who enter through Osborne, but their ser-
vices in that rank will be shorter, with the general
result that except for the effect of the accelerated
promotion which they may obtain by doing well in
their final examinatio is, their age will usually be
about a year more on attaining the rank of Lieu-
tenant. This will be no bar to their advancement
acco-ding to merit. The same subsequent career
will be open to them as to Officers who have entered
the Navy through Osborne and Dartmouth.
10. Naval Cadets under training will be subject to
the Re.-ulations for the time being in force respect-
ing such Cadets.
11. Paren's or Guardians are required to make a
private allowance of 601. per annum to Cadets from
the time theyjoin the Naval Servlceuntil they reach
the rank of Acting Sub Lieutenant (namely for a
period of about 3 years and 4 minths) and thereafter
a private allowance at the rate of 20'. a year for the
pjeriod (usuall not exceeding two months) that they
remain Acting Sub-Lieutenants with nay nt the rate
of 3'. 6d. a day before booming Sub-Lieutenants.
Onreach'ng the i-<nk of Sub-Lieutenant, an Officer
is required to provide himself with the uniform of a
Commissioned Officer.
12. Cadets will be paid is. a day from the time of
entry until they become Midshipmen, when their
pay will become Is. M. ad ly. On reaching the rank of
Sub-Lieutenant an Officer will be paid 7s. Bd. a day.
The commencing rate cf pay of a Lieutenant,
reached after at most two years as Sub- Lieutenant,
is 10s. a day.
A Sub-Lieutenant can meet his mess and other
necessary expenditure on the pay of 7s. 6d. a day.
IS. The parent or guardian of every Cadet is
required to provide outfit under the regulations in
force The outfit, together with a sex i ant, costs
about £60.
14. All travelling expenses for Cadets are advanced
by the Paymaster of the Naval Establishment to
which they are attached, but will be charged to the
Cadet.
Such money as may he required by Cadet3 for any
special circumstance will be advanced by the Pay-
15. Parents or Guardians of Cadets munt. In all
cases of permanent change of residence, inform the
Admiralty and the Commanding Officer of the Ship
in which their sons are serving.
16 Cadets may be required to withdraw at any
time, if in the opinion of the Lords Commissionew
of the Admiralty—
;1) they fail to obtain a satisfactory standard, or
(2) their conduct is unsatisfactory, or
(Si they are considered unsuitable for the Naval
Service.
17. It will be open to Officers, after reaching
Commissioned rank to volunteer for service In any
one of the special branches, undertaking either
Navigation, Gunnery, Torpedo, or Engineering duty.

The outfit required on joining is the same as given
on page3 861-862 for a Cadet in the Training Cruiser.
SEXTANT.
Cadets after joining will be required to procure a
Sextant. The regulations as to Sextants are given
on page 862.

Both papers marked optional may be taken.
Candidates will not be excluded who do not take the
papers marked optional, but "O candidate will be
accepted who does not show a competent knowledge
of mathematics as well as obtain a satisfactory
aggregate in the examination.
Certificate A obtained in the " Officers' Training
Corps " will entitle the holder to an addition of 400
marks.
The question papers (except in elementary en-
gineering) will be the same as those taken in corres-
ponding subjects in the military entrance examina-
tr ns, particulars of which can be obtained from the
Civil Service Commissioners, Burlington Gardens,

The paper on elementary engineering will comprise
ques' ions In the subjects of the following syllabus.
The questions wUl be of a very elementary character,
and knowledge of worxshon practice will not be
required.
SYLLABUS OF EXAMINATION IN
ELUMENTARY ENGINEERING
Applications in mechanism of elementary mechan-
ical principles. Machines considered as'means of
(ii converting motion, (6i transmitting power.
Simple examples Ve'oei'y ratio. Mechanical
advantage. Efficiency. Horse power, how measured.
Dynamo -eeWs The Indicator and Indicator
diagrams. Crank-effort In relation to piston thrust.
Function of flywheel.
Elementary treatment of strength of materials.
Tensile, compressive, and shearing stress. Elastic
and non-elastic strain ; elastic limit. Hooke's law.
Young's Modulus of Elasticity. Behaviour of iron
and steel in a testi >g machine. Str"ss-etrain
diagrams. Simple examples of calculation of dimen-
sions in relation to strength. Stresses in the
members of frames where the members are jointed
and loaded at 'he joints ; graphic method.
Principle of the conservation of energy as applied
In the steam »ngine and oilier boat engines. Con-
version of energy of fuel into heat, and heat into
mechanical effect.' Boiler and engine etficienoy.
Common forms of engiues a >d boiie's.and general
features of action. Properties of steam. Expansion
of steam in the cyl'nder. Compound expansion.

* Following the Army Regulations, a Candidate may say that if he is not among the first (so many)
successful competitors for the Royal Military Academy or the Royal Military College (33 the case may be)
he will elect for a Naval Cadetship.
Note.— Candidales who hare seized with His Majesty's Naval or Military Forces during the war will be
allowed a deduction from actual age in respect of such service. To secure this concession candidates must
furnish an official certificate as to the period of their service,
