(40.) Officers of the Military Branch whoare appoint
ed for 12 months' Naval Training will be granted half
these allowances for equipment on being appointed.
XII.— Promotion.
(41.) Officers of the lower ranks on the Active List
will, if qualified by the Regulations, be eligible for
promotion to the higher ranks, at the discretion of
the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty.
2. All applications for promotion should be
addressed to the Registrar-General, as soon as
Officers are in all respects qualified for the same.
3. The date of seniority of Officers promoted will
be the date on which their promotion was approved
by their Lordships, unless directions are given to
the contrary.
XIII. — Retirement and Removal.
(42.) Officers on the Active List of the Royal Naval
Reserve, when not called out, will be permitted to
resign their Commissions or appointments at the
discretion of the Lords Commissioners of the
Admiralty.
2. Applications to resign should be addressed to
the Registrar-General.
(43.) Officers who are physically unfit for the
Service, will, if they are eligible, be placed on the
Retired List [see Chapter IV. of the Regulations!,
otherwise their names will be removed from the List.
(44.) The age for compulsory retirement from the
Active List of Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve is
for—
Commanders who were Lieutenants
on 8th February, 1896 .... 55
Lieutenants holding Commissions as
such on 8th February, 1896 . . .55
Sub-Lieutenants holding Commis-
sions as such on 8th February, 1S96 . 50
2. The age for compulsory retirement from the
Active List of Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve
entering after the 8th February, 1866, or coming on
the Lists by promotion after that date, will be for —
Commanders (who held Lieutenants
rank with seniority after 8th Feb-
ruary, 1896) 50

Sub-Lieutenants 40
3. The age for compulsory retirement from the
Active List for Senior Engineers, Engineers, and
Assistant Engineers, Royal Naval Reserve, will be
as follows:—
Officers holding Commissions on 7th
March. 1904 55
Officers joining, or coming on the
Lists by promotion, after 7th March,
1904 45
4. Skippers will be discharged from the Reserve : -
(a) On completion of each period of 5 years ser
vice as Skipper should their services be no longer re-
quired.
(6) On the completion of 20 years' service in the
Reserve (Trawler Section) including time served as
Second Hand, Deck Hand or Trimmer, R.N.R.
mission, as the case may be, on account of:—
1. Offences against the rules, discipline, or
character of His Majesty's Service.
2. Suspension or Cancellation of Certificate of
Competency under the provisions of the
Merchant Shipping Act, 1894.
3. Acceptance of a position in the Mercantile
Marine below that of Master, Mate, Appren-
tice or Midshipman.
4. Failure to comply with the regulations in
regard to annually reporting themselves or
performing a reasonable amount of drill.
5. Failure to qualify for confirmation, promotion
or to obtain a Test Certificate within the
time allowed by the Regulations.
6. Withdrawal from the Sea Service as a
profession.
7. Non-Employment in responsible Engineering
positions or acceptance of employment which
is not consistent with the position of an
Officer in His Majesty's Service (in the case
of Commissioned Engineer Officers.)
XIV. — Pensions.
(46.) Officers who may receive hurts or wounds
whilst on active service in the Royal Navy, or whilst
undergoing drill, will receive the same pensions and
allowances to which Officers in the Royal Navy of
corresponding rank would be entitled under similar
circumstances.
Subject to the discretion of the Admiralty, a dis-
charge gratuity of £60 will be granted to all Skippers
on completing 20 years' service in the Reserve (in-
cluding time served as Second Hand, Deck Hand or
Trimmer, R.N.R.)
2. Subject to the discretion of the Admiralty, a
gratuity of £60 will be granted to Warrant Engineers
on attaining the age of 50 years, provided they have
completed 20 years' service and have pei formed the
necessary training, etc. Those who are retired before
attaining the age of 50 years and have fulfilled the
abnve conditions of service, etc., will lie granted a De-
ferred Gratuity Certificate entiirling them to the
gratuity on attaining the age of 50.
Warrant Engineers, whose seniority in that rank
dales prior to 1st March, 1912, may be allowed the
option of receiving a Life Pension of £15 a year from
the age of 60 years in lieu of this gratuity.
3. The Pension for Warrant Engineers of seniority
dated prior to 1st March, 1912, will also be given,
either permanently or temporarily, to any holder of a
Deferred Pension Certificate, who, before the age of 60,
may be pronounced, upon medical examination, to be
wholly and permanently incapacitated from earning
his livelihood, provided that such incapacity is not
due to his own imprudence or misconduct.
(47.) Officers while holding acting appointments of
higher rank will receive all the advantages attached
to the superior rank in cases of hurts and wounds.
(48.) Widows and children (if any) of Officers who,
whilst on actual Service, may be killed in action, or
die from accident resulting from the performance of
their duty, will receive the same pensions and com-'
passionate allowances as the widows and children of
Naval Officers of corresponding rank would be
entitled to under similar circumstances.
