PRIZES, TESTIMONIALS, &c.
THU " WAKEFIELD " SCHOLARSHIPS.
These two scholarships were endowed by Sir Charles Wakefield, Bt., C.B.E., for a period of three
years to assist in defraying the expenses of residence at the Royal Air Force (Cadet) College, of cadets
whose parents or guardians are in reduced circumstances. The scholarships, which are of the annual
value of £75, are tenable for two years.
THE “ VICTORIA LEAGUE ” SCHOLARSHIPS.
These scholarships were founded by the Orange Free State Branch of the Victoria League, which
placed a sum of £1,500 at the disposal of the Air Council, and it was decided to endow a number of
scholarships tenable at the Royal Air Force (Cadet) College, by South African Flight Cadets. The
scholarships are of the annual value of approximately £35, and are tenable for one year.
THE “ ABDY GERRARD FELLOWES" MEMORIAL PRIZES.
These prizes were founded by Mrs. D. L. Fellowes in memory of her son, the late Captain Abdy
H. G. Fellowes. Mrs. Fellowes has undertaken to provide funds for a period of five years for the
award of prizes to the value of £20 annually. It has been decided to award a prize of £10 half-
yearly to the Cadet who obtains the highest total marks in mathematics and general science when
passing out of the Royal Air Force (Cadet) College, Cranwell.
THE "GORDON SHEPHARD" MEMORIAL PRIZE.
This prize wasjEounded in memory of the late Brigadier-General G. S. Shephard, D.S.O., M.C.
The income on a sum of money placed upon trust with the Air Council by the father is to be applied
in the provision of annual prizes for essays on Reconnaissance and kindred subjects, submitted by
officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the Royal Air Force.
THE " UYDE-THOMSON " MEMORIAL PRIZE.
This prize was founded in memory of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Hyde-Thomson, R.A.F.,
who was killed whilst flying on duty.
The interest on a sum of £1,000, provided by the father, is to be devoted to the promotion of
efficiency in wireless telegraphy and kindred subjects in the Royal Air Force.
THE “ R. M. GROVES” MEMORIAL PRIZES.
These prizes were founded in memory of the late Air Commodore Robert Marsland Groves, C.B.,
D.S.O., A.F.C., R.A.F., who w'as killed 27th May, 1920, whilst flying on duty.
A sum of money has been placed at the disposal of the Air Council, and is to be expended annually
during the next ten years, in the provision of prizes for (1) Practical Flying; (2) Aerial Navigation;
(3) Aeronautical Research ; and (4) Essays on “A Forecast of Aerial Development.”
THE "DUNNING” MEMORIAL CUP.
The Dunning Memorial Cup was originally purchased privately in 1917 by a number of Officers
to commemorate the achievement of the late Squadron Commander Edwin H. Dunning, D.S.C., who
was the first officer to land an aeroplane successfully on the deck of a ship under way. He was sub¬
sequently killed on 7th August, 1917.
The Cup has now been placed in the gift of the Air Council, by whom it -Bull be awarded annually to
the officer who has performed during the preceding year the most distinguished service in co-operation.
