War Services of the Colonels.
94 Colonel Thomas Wildman served with the 7'.h Hussars in the campaign of 1808-9 under Sir John
Moore, and was present in the cavalry engagements at Mayorga, Benevente, and throughout the
retreat to Corunna. Subsequently in the Peninsular campaigns of 1813 and 14, including the invest¬
ment and surrender of Pampeluna, the battle of Orthes, and intermediate affairs. Served also the
campaign of 1815 as Aide-de-camp to the Earl of Uxbridge, including the action at Quatre Bras,
retreat on the 17th, and battle of Waterloo, at which last he was slightly wounded.
94* Colonel Bowles served in the north of Germany in 1805 and 6, under Lord Cathcart. Present
at the siege and capture of Copenhagen in 1807. In the Peninsula from 1809 to 1814 (excepting the
winters of 1810 and 11), and was present at the passage of the Douro ; battles of Talavera, Salamanca,
and Vittoria ; sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Burgos, and San Sebastian ; capture of Madrid ;
passages of the Bidassoa, Nivelle, Nive, and Adour; and the investment of Bayonne. Present at the
battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and at the capture of Paris.
95 Colonel Godwin served with the 9th at the Ferrol, in 1800 ; in Hanover, in 1805-6 ; in Portu¬
gal from Sept. 1808 to July 1809, including the passage of the Douro. In 1810, marched from
Gibraltar in command of the two flank companies to Tarifa; proceeded from thence with Lord Lyne-
doch to the action of Barrosa and was severely wounded. Served also throughout the Burmese war
under Sir Archibald Campbell, from the landing of the troops in May 1824 until the Peace in Feb.
1826. During this period he had held six separate commands against the enemy : in one he captured
the fortified town of Martaban, 30th Oct. 1324, and ultimately the province; on the 8th Feb. 1825, he
captured the fortified position of Tantabain, and took 36 pieces of Artillery together with a quantity of
other arms. He was also present at every action with the enemy (except those in Dec. 1824, when he
was still employed at Martaban), particularly at Sembike on the 1st Dec. 1825, when in command of
the advanced Guard he carried the front face of the enemy’s position. Commanded the 1st Brigade iu
Ava, composed of H.M.’s 4)st Regt. and the 12th and 18th Regts. of Native Infantry.
96 Colonel Robbins served in the Peninsula, France, and Flanders, with the 7th Hussars, and was
severely wounded at Waterloo.
97 Colonel Rainey served with the 82nd at the siege and capture of Copenhagen, in 1807 ; the
campaign of 1808-9, including the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, and Corunna, also the retreat under Sir
John Moore. Accompanied the Regt. to Walcheren, in 1809, and was present at the surrender of
Middleburgh, siege and capture of Flushing. Joined the army in the Peninsula, in May 1812, and
served as Aide-de-camp to Sir Thomas Bradford during the siege of the Forts of Salamanca, battle of
Salamanca, capture of Madrid, siege of Burgos, retreat therefrom, actions at Torquemada and Duenas.
Served afterwards in the Portuguese service in advance through the Trosos Montes in 1813, at the
battle of Vittoria, actions of Villa Franca and Tolosa, storm of the fortified convent in front of San
Sebastian, at both the sieges and storm of San Sebastian, passage of the Bidassoa, battle of the Nivelle,
battles of the Nive on the 9th and 10th Dec.—severely wounded : wounded also at the siege of San
Sebastian. Served in France with the Army-of-Occupation from the capitulation of Paris in 1815 to
the end of 1818.
98 Colonel Dalyell served with the 43rd at the battle of Kioge and surrender of Copenhagen, in
1807 ; also the Corunna campaign in 1808-9. Returned to the Peninsula with the Regt. in 1809,
where he served until the end of that war in 1814 (except an absence in consequence of a wound),
including the action of the Coa near Almeida, battle of Busaco, retreat to the lines at Lisbon, advance
after Massena, actions of Pombal, Redinha (wounded), Foz d’Arouce, Casal Nova, and Sabugal—
severely wounded ; battles of Vittoria and Toulouse, for which last he received the Brevet rank of
Major. Served also in the campaign of 1815, and was present at the capture of Paris.
99 Colonel George Lewis served in Sir Richard Strachan’s action, 4th Nov. 1805. Commanded a
battalion of Marines in the American war, including the action at Bladensburg, attack on Baltimore,
and various skirmishes in the Chesapeak.
100 Colonel Adair’s services : Battle of the Nile ; siege and capitulation of the Castle of St. Elmo,
Naples, and the town of Capua, in 1798 ; blockade of Malta, and surrender of La Valetta; blockade
of Cadiz, and present at an attack made by Spanish Gun Vessels when becalmed under the batteries
of that town ; on board H.M.S. Genereux, at the capture of La Diane, French frigate. Served also at
New Orleans.
101 Col. Connolly served in Lord Bridport’s action, 23rd June 1795. In 1796 served in the
Mediterranean, including the evacuation of Bastia, capture of Porto Ferrajo, and destruction of Mar-
tello Tower in St. Fiorenzo Bay. On board H.M.S. Excellent in the battle of Cape St. Vincent, 14th
Feb. 1797. Capture of Admiral Perrie’s squadron ofFToulon in 1798, consisting of three frigates and
two brigs. On board the Hannibal, in the battle of Algesiras, 6th July 1801, wounded and taken
prisoner. On board H.M.S. Penelope, in the action off Flushing and Ostend, under Sir Sidney Smith,
16th May 1804. Present at the siege of Copenhagen, and capture of Danish fleet in 1807, and at
Nyebourg in 1808. In 1812, on board H.M.S. Hamadryad, when attacked by French privateers;
debarked with detachments at Scheveling, and took possession of the Hague in 1814. During the
above periods he has been very frequently engaged with the enemy in affairs of gun-boats and batteries,
&e. &c. He has received a reward from the Patriotic Fund.
102 Colonel Dumas served at the blockade of Malta, in 1799 ; in Egypt, in 1801; at the battle of
Maida, in 1806 ; and again in Egypt, in 1807. Medal for services in Egypt.
103 Colonel Payler served in Sicily in 1806 and 7; the campaign of 1808-9 under Sir John Moore;
